There are people in this +234 who have spent their entire adult lives without ever experiencing basic things that should be normal: owning a passport, taking a spontaneous trip, living alone, going to a concert, cinema, eating at a nice restaurant, or having money left after paying bills. Their entire existence is work, transport, rent, food, family obligations and trying not to fall behind. Basic things have been made into luxury in this country. That’s what poverty really looks like. It doesn’t just limit what you own. It limits the life you get to experience. Elections is next year, if you like tie yourself to another 4 years of suffering and not go out to vote or continue supporting this incompetent administration.

Situational awareness that is only applicable when you’re a victim is a sign of a defeated people. You get robbed and people blame you for renting an apartment in that area even when you are living in a country with a government that is supposed to protect you. You are sexually assaulted but everybody is focused on how you dressed and why you should not be outside past 7pm even though you were coming back from work and stuck in traffic. A power drunk police officer extorts you and people say maybe you should not have bought a Benz since it is associated with yahoo boys. You are out protesting and after getting tear-gassed or illegally detained, people say you should not have joined the protest when you don’t know any 'oga at the top'. You are only supposed to use discretion when you are at the receiving end. Even when it is clear that you’re being oppressed, you are supposed to use wisdom since the person oppressing you is a 'big man'. Bail is free, but you need to apply wisdom. I can go on and on. You simply cannot build a nation on injustice and inequality. This is not how to live life!

As a trainee associate, nothing makes me happier than working with a senior that actually wants me to learn and not set me up to fail. God will really bless this senior for me, I do my best work when I work with him cause he’s such an incredible teacher.

1. Apply to as many law firm as possible (not just 5 or 10 or 20). Use trthrive.com/nysc and ensure your CV articulates your strengths well 2. If possible, physically go to law firms close to your area to meet partners. Dress so well and be ready to sell yourself, as some won't even ask for your CV. Prioritise actively gaining good experience as much as possible in any decent firm you get into (pay might not be high and firm might not be top tier) but be ready to learn and deliver at your very best level. (Everybody will notice- employers and client) 4. Get certifications and other skills that are valuable (e.g people's skills, communication, Privacy is a big thing now) 5. Research very high paying roles, check the requirements and narrow down to building specialisation. Now make up your mind to be extremely good and indispensable in your lifetime. 6. Find and be accountable to a successful mentor, network and keep building around your strengths. 7. Volunteer to serve or build a brand around a project or goal that you is rewarding or highly valued nationally and globally e.g sustainability projects. (This will help you to get international scholarships, fellowships which can change your life forever cause a fully funded scholarship in the UK e.g Chevening available to 2.2 graduates can be worth over 80 million naira all for free) 8. Be ready to receive a lot of rejection. Emotionally train yourself. Read books to support you and never compare yourself with others. 9.Sell your self actively, don't let your grades affect your mentally or force you to make bad choices like hiding your face or stuff. 10. What do you advise as the practical way forward for someone who has: - 2:2 in university - 2:2 in law school - did NYSC before law school. These three factors I suppose are greatly contributing to the lack thereof of responses from law firms being applied to. If it were

I love how we evolve as professionals. There was a time I desired to be at a tier-one law firm. Today, I'm quite indifferent about it. At least not for money because an average-smart lawyer would know how to meet the figures in no time, and bridge the gap.

If you’re confused about money, investing and all, read this. Especially if you’re young, and still growing your income, please ignore all the noise, there will always be opportunities in the market and you’re not doomed. You don’t want to jump the gun on a shaky foundation.

When we started M.A and A in 2023, entry level pay was about 100k and that bothered me so much for months. I was constantly praying for good briefs so as to increase salaries and set up other welfare packages for my staff. Today, no lawyer in our firm earns less than 250k as entry level and I am still not satisfied with it. This is a law firm that is not even upto 3 years, without any big or major client yet; and to augment our current pay, and welfare including HMO, December packages, we give room for private practice, either through their own sources or my referrals. So when I read or hear about how law firms belonging to Senior Advocates of Nigeria, highly placed and successful lawyers, who have top clients, handle big briefs and live comfortably both publicly and privately, but pay their lawyers as low as 50k-100k, with nothing more not even HMO, I take pride in what I am doing. One of my priorities as the owner of the firm is not even to make profits, because I am confident that it will come in the long run, but eagerness to make the lives of my lawyers and others better, at least financially. I believe that the better I pay and take care of people who are working for me, the more God blesses me. There are times I have decided to increase salaries without any money on ground and when it’s time to pay God has a magical way of coming through for us. I am tempted to ask: what does it feel like as a boss with millions of naira in your account, dashing people money, living in houses worth hundreds of millions and ridding expensive cars, yet your staff cannot afford to feed and live meaningfully? Where is your conscience? Where is your humanity? One sad reality is that NBA cannot do anything to make the lives of these young lawyers better. Every election year, NBA politician use “welfare of young lawyers” as campaign points but once an election finishes, everybody forgets about young lawyers. It is well.

@doyin_deji I do not care for all the parties involved but less privileged does not mean unintelligent. How about the less privileged say ‘Hello, if you do not mind, can I take a picture of/with you?’. It is unfair when we associate less privileged with unintelligence.
