⭕️ Drop Site News publisher Dr. Nika Soon-Shiong says she has been removed from the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), after opposing a proposal to reexamine who qualifies as a journalist for CPJ’s database and protections. 🔹The announcement comes after writer Mohammed El-Kurd reported that CPJ had formed a “special task force” to consider excluding journalists affiliated with what it describes as “state-backed propaganda outlets” or “terror-affiliated organizations,” as well as journalists deemed to have engaged in certain “behaviors and activities.” 🔹Soon-Shiong published an email she sent to the board arguing the proposal would politicize CPJ’s mission, could exclude journalists based on their employer or alleged conduct, and undermine protections for journalists, particularly those covering Gaza. 🔹She writes that the proposal followed discussions of a Free Beacon article targeting her and accusing Drop Site News of extremism over its reporting on Gaza. Soon-Shiong said she was informed Monday that she is no longer a CPJ board member. 🔹An internal CPJ email shared with Drop Site calls reports that the organization plans to change its definition “false allegations” and “untrue.” It says the review, led by CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa team, is focused on its documentation of journalists killed in the Israel-Gaza war after some individuals previously listed as journalists were later determined to have been combatants, and is expected to be completed in July. CPJ publicly announced that it had removed 20 names from its list of Palestinian media workers killed by Israel after 8 were given obituaries by militant groups. Another 12 were removed for undisclosed reasons.

This is probably my favourite chart I've produced on China's electricity transition because it leaves nowhere to retreat except ideology. It shows both the share of China's electricity generation (%) and the absolute electricity generated (TWh) by each major electricity sector. The story is hard to miss: • Fossil fuels fell from 80% to 58% of generation. • Renewables rose from 19% to 38%. • Nuclear grew from ~1% to just 4%. But the real story, hidden in the table below the chart, makes everything even more remarkable. China's total electricity generation exploded from 1,350 TWh in 2000 to 10,600 TWh in 2025 — an almost 8-fold increase in just 25 years, one of the largest and fastest electricity system expansions in human history. Within that unprecedented growth: • Wind generation grew from effectively zero to 1,166 TWh. • Solar generation grew from effectively zero to 1,166 TWh. • Hydro's share fell from 19% to 14%, yet hydro generation still increased nearly sixfold, from 257 TWh to 1,484 TWh. • Renewables generated 4,028 TWh in 2025, compared with 424 TWh from nuclear. China didn't abandon fossil fuels. It built the world's largest fossil electricity system, then built an even larger clean energy system around it. The data here, quietly destroys two common narratives simultaneously: ❌ "China is building coal, therefore renewables don't matter." ❌ "China's transition is mostly nuclear." Neither is true. The dominant story of China's energy transition isn't coal. It isn't nuclear. It's scale — and an energy buildout driven relentlessly by economics and cost. Because in energy, as in most industries, cost wins. And the accountants always beat the ideologues.

The Other Face of Gaza… How the Occupation Changed Lives and Faces “My children and people are afraid of how I look… I face painful and difficult situations every day.” With these words, Najwa Abu Atiwi, a mother of five, describes the tragedy she has been living through since she suffered severe injuries in an Israeli airstrike that completely changed her face. Najwa sustained devastating injuries, including extensive fractures to her facial bones, upper jaw, nose, and cheek. She also lost her right eye entirely. Despite undergoing several surgeries, she continues to suffer from severe facial disfigurement and extreme difficulty opening her mouth, eating, and speaking, turning even the simplest daily tasks into a painful struggle. The suffering is not only physical. The psychological pain runs even deeper. Najwa lost one of her daughters, and with that loss came another devastating reality—she also lost her facial features. They stress that she urgently needs to travel abroad for treatment, including reconstructive surgery for her facial bones and skull, a prosthetic eye, and complex surgeries to rebuild her nose and eyelids. Najwa does not only need medical treatment—she needs a second chance at life. A chance to reclaim her face, her smile, and her ability to embrace her children without fear.
