8. That meeting rattled me for the next few hours, but it prepared us Lessons learned: Control the environment as much as possible - it can hurt or help the pitch Always know Why YOU?! Always finish strong and be polite. Maybe you messed up, maybe the person is having a bad day

7. I was uncomfortable the rest of the meeting. I don’t remember any other details. I wanted to hide under the table or run away. Obviously you can’t do that, so we finished as strong as we could.

6. Fortunately, no one comes. Darius then says, “you guys have to nail this question. I could take this deck and raise $100 million easily. You’re asking me for $100k. I know plenty of guys who spend that on a vacation.”

5. Darius is yelling in the library and people are looking at us. I remember we’re three black men, so I’m waiting for someone to complain or security to escort us out. Henri and I are not members of the Harvard Club. We are MBAs though, so maybe that will help?

4. We get a few pages into the deck. Darius stops us and asks “Why You?” Henri and I pull together an answer about how we’re hungry Things went left. Darius angrily stands up and yells “Why YOU?!” Henri and I look up at Darius and look at each other The meeting may be unsavable

3. We didn’t have a meeting room booked, so assumed that we would meet in the lobby or dining area. Mistake #2. Darius walked us up to the LIBRARY. Can we talk here? The 3 of us are sitting at a small table. We break out copies of our pitch deck and I patch in my friend.

2. Henri and I were dressed in our suits and ready to try to win him over. My good friend worked for Darius and was the one who originally introduced us. He also insisted that we have him on speaker phone during the meeting. Mistake #1.
