Many podcasters ask me what Delta's number one selection criterion is for a candidate. I think, more than anything, they look for people who do not know the meaning of the word "quit." Whether you’re looking to join Delta or seeking success in any life choice, refusing to quit will take you very far. The photo is of me coming into the last point on the last day of Delta's Selection and Assessment. I just did 40 miles, carrying 58 pounds in my pack. It took me 15 hours and 15 minutes. I had no idea this was the last day, the finish. I no longer felt that I was connected with my body. I was just moving forward. I didn’t know the meaning of the word “quit.”

My appendix burst when I was a kid. For surgery and six days in the hospital, from 18 January to 24 January 1961, the bill totaled $145.25.

After I had helped investigate the Khobar Towers, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia truck bombing, I went to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Cairo, Egypt. I evaluated the security of the military and Department of State personnel's housing and made recommendations to upgrade their security. After having been in Egypt three times, I decided to take a little time to see the Pyramids. This photo was taken in July 1996.

@boonotestigamo1 Yes, I remember are chance meeting at the the aquarium in Auckland. My wife and I were both surprised that we were recognized. Yes, it was in the in the early 80s when I climbed with the New SAS. I do have photos and I will scan some.

I gave this plaque to the Unit upon my retirement. It hangs in Delta. This is what I wrote on it: TO FREEDOM'S GUARDIANS THANKS MIKE R. VINING 1989-1999 I found these Native American arrowheads on Range 19, which testifies to its long history of use that continues to this day. They symbolize man's first use of weapons for war, peace, and survival. The arrowheads are displayed as part of the Special Forces insignia. The atom emblem symbolizes today's threat to peace, the counterproliferation of weapons of mass destruction by rogue nations. A piece of trinitite represents the atom's nucleus. Trinitite is sand that was transformed into glass by the pressure and heat from the first atomic detonation, July 16, 1945, 5:29:49 A.M. at Trinity Site, near Alamogordo, NM. The plaque signifies the unit's role as the quiet guardians of our nation's freedom and public safety, for which this country is truly indebted. It has been my honor to serve with this organization.
