JUST IN: JMPD officers uncovered a suspected operation in Johannesburg's CBD where expired juices and yoghurts were allegedly being relabelled with fake expiry dates before being sold to the public. The discovery was made after informal traders fled from officers during a by-law enforcement operation. 38-Year-Old Foreign National Arrested in Everest Informal Settlement in Springs After Being Found with 11 Explosives Linked to Suspected Illegal Mining Activities Authorities in Springs arrested a 38-year-old foreign national at the Everest Informal Settlement on Wednesday after he was found in possession of explosives allegedly linked to illegal mining activities. The arrest was carried out by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department Intervention Unit and South African Police Service Crime Intelligence following a tip-off, after the suspect allegedly attempted to flee on sight. A search led to the recovery of 11 Superpower blasting cartridges, 11 cap fuses and two detonator fuses. Explosives experts and the Local Criminal Record Centre were called to the scene to process and secure the items in accordance with safety procedures. The suspect has been detained at Springs Police Station and is expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of explosives. Authorities say the recovered items are commonly associated with illegal mining operations. Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing while the suspect remains in custody ahead of his court appearance. Further details will be presented during proceedings at the Springs Magistrate’s Court as the case continues.
