Pearl Jam arrived at Pinkpop only nine months after releasing its debut album, Ten. The album had not been an immediate commercial success, but relentless touring and the growing popularity of songs including “Alive,” “Jeremy,” and “Even Flow” helped propel it into the mainstream. By 1993, Ten had reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Vedder became known for dangerous stage climbing and crowd diving during the band’s early performances. At Pinkpop, he climbed high above the stage during “Porch,” crossed part of the overhead structure, and eventually dropped toward the audience. The performance became one of the defining images of the early 1990s grunge movement. Pearl Jam’s set also included “Black,” “Alive,” and a closing performance of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Other performers at the 1992 festival included Soundgarden, PJ Harvey, Lou Reed, David Byrne, and The Cult. Pearl Jam later became a vocal advocate for improved concert safety after nine fans died during the band’s performance at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival in 2000. #drthehistories
