Thinking Zone. Afternoon on the shore of the Black Sea. I am sitting in the local restaurant drinking my coffee with the dignity of a person who, by God’s law, heroically managed not to get sick the entire winter only to collapse magnificently from some virus at the end of spring, precisely when everyone is already theatrically posting photographs of cherries, sunshine, and “new beginnings.” My voice has almost disappeared and I am forced to remain silent so that my throat will not hurt, which honestly is one of the most ironic forms of divine humor, because precisely in the Balkans silence is usually perceived as something deeply suspicious and entirely unnatural. And while I sit here quietly watching the sea, I find myself thinking about Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the German princess who became the wife of George III, and who gave birth to fifteen children. Fifteen. And thirteen of them survived into adulthood, which for the eighteenth century practically borders on medical science fiction and divine logistics. Now that is historical discipline. To remain silent, nod nobly, wear a crown, and meanwhile produce children with the efficiency of a well-organized dynastic factory while men in powdered wigs around you discuss geopolitics, colonies, and philosophy as though they themselves are performing the difficult labor. And here, of course, I, the modern Balkan woman with coffee, headphones, opinions about everything, and a chronic inability to behave quietly, begin experiencing a certain respect for Charlotte. Because after merely two days of silence I am already conducting internal philosophical debates with myself, staring dramatically at seagulls, and feeling as though I exist inside a Russian novel. Meanwhile she gave birth to fifteen children. Honestly, after learning this information I suddenly begin feeling far less tragic. And yet there is something beautiful in the fact that centuries later women still sit beside the sea thinking about the very same thing: how strange, exhausting, and absurdly beautiful it is to be a woman, regardless of whether one wears a crown or simply holds a cup of coffee with a slightly damaged throat on the shore of the Black Sea.
