@ProfMarkTaubert 100% agree. If it’s a choice between assisted dying or poor palliative care it is not a choice. The privileged would have a choice but not the minoritised and the socially deprived. Please drop this bill which would widen inequalities

Great to see @andyburnham acknowledge the importance of fixing palliative and social care before considering #assisteddying services. With @AzzaElghonaimy and @DrCatherineUK we have been working hard with @rcgp to ensure GP led palliative care is supported and resourced in order to reduce inequalities and improve patient outcomes. We were inspired to bring this motion before @rcgp council because of the distressing stories of bad deaths in the media that surrounded the assisted dying debate, our belief that everyone should be able to access high quality palliative care at end of life, and our experience that provision is patchy and inadequately resourced. Speaking in a personal capacity as this is a conscience issue for my party, I'm relieved to hear this. I will be there on 11th Sept to vote against this assisted dying PMB (again)- the state of our health service is frightening, the options being put forward by the pro lobby are a false choice; everyone deserves a dignified death, but that's not currently happening as it is. But it can and must be. It is not true that the only options are completely unacceptable palliative situations and horrible deaths or assisted dying. We must fund our palliative and hospices. But we must also be wary of the impact of AD on research into disease. The number of times cancer was mentioned in the AD debates as the natural pre-cursor to having an AD was really damaging and the same with other life-limiting conditions. We must be supporting people to live well first. That's my priority. And I'm not ashamed of it. Good deaths and dying are not unavailable- they should be the gold standard. It is false to suggest it can never happen without AD.
