For over twenty years, an engineer named Richard Bernstein did precisely what his doctors ordered. He ate the diet the American Diabetes Association blessed, close to half of it carbohydrate, and chased the resulting flood of sugar with large doses of insulin. It was killing him. By his mid-thirties his body was breaking down: failing kidneys, nerve damage, the early wreckage of a Type 1 diabetic who had been told in 1946 he would be lucky to reach forty. The treatment was textbook. The patient was dying on it. In 1969 he got hold of a machine that blew the whole thing open. It was a blood glucose meter, a three-pound box sold only to hospitals to tell an unconscious diabetic from a drunk. Bernstein could get one at all only because his wife was a doctor and it was bought in her name. He began measuring his own blood sugar several times a day, the first patient in the world known to do it. What the numbers showed was damning. His levels were swinging violently outside any safe range, on the exact diet the experts had sworn by. So he ran the experiment they never bothered to run. He cut the carbohydrate hard and swapped the big insulin doses for small, precise ones. His blood sugars flattened to near normal. His complications began to reverse. He had cracked tight control for Type 1, the type the profession insisted diet could never touch, and the very same approach worked for Type 2. Then came the most telling part of all. When he tried to publish what had just saved his life, the journals turned him away, not on the evidence, but because he was an engineer and not a physician. So at the age of 45 he enrolled in medical school, for the sole purpose of earning the right to be heard. He qualified, opened his own practice, and spent the next several decades proving the establishment wrong one patient at a time. The profession never really thanked him for it. It had spent years handing a high-carbohydrate diet to people whose defining problem is that they cannot handle carbohydrate, and then blaming those same people when they fell apart. Bernstein lived with Type 1 diabetes for 78 years and died last year at 90. He outlived a great many of the experts who swore it could not be done, and a great many more of the patients who were simply given the official advice and told to trust it.

240 years ago today, the most underrated general in American history died. From a sunburn. Nathanael Greene was never supposed to be a soldier. He was a Quaker from Rhode Island who ran his family's iron forge. He had asthma, a stiff leg that gave him a permanent limp, and zero combat experience. His own church suspended him just for going to watch a military parade. So how did he end up commanding the entire Southern army? He read. He bought every book on warfare he could find and taught himself strategy from scratch. Washington noticed, and trusted him more than almost anyone. By 1780 the war in the South was a disaster. The previous American general got beaten so badly he fled 200 miles on horseback. Congress let Washington pick the replacement, and he picked Greene without hesitation. Greene's plan was insane. He looked at his small, starving, half-naked army and decided he could not win, so he would lose correctly. He ran Cornwallis all over the Carolinas until the British were exhausted, far from supply, and bleeding men they could not replace. "We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again." At Guilford Courthouse, Cornwallis technically won the battle and lost a quarter of his army doing it. That was the whole point. Greene lost almost every fight on paper and won the entire South. Cornwallis limped off to a little tobacco port to rest and refit. The port was called Yorktown. Here's the part that should make you angry. To feed and clothe his men, Greene personally co-signed for war supplies because the government wouldn't pay. When the bills came due, Congress refused to honor them. The man who saved the South came home buried in debt that wasn't his. Georgia gave him a plantation near Savannah as thanks. He finally had peace. Then one hot afternoon in June 1786 he spent the day walking a neighbor's rice fields with no hat. He collapsed from sunstroke and a week later he was dead at 43. One last twist. After he died, his widow Catharine took in a broke young houseguest tinkering with an idea. His name was Eli Whitney, and the cotton gin was invented at the dead general's home. June 19, 1786. Remember the name. Nathanael Greene.

75 years ago today: USS Tang (SS 563) was launched at PNS. MOH recipient Richard O'Kane & his wife, Tang's sponsor, were present. Named for the boat he commanded in WWII, the most combat successful US Navy submarine in history, USS Tang (SS 306), a name that warrants repeating.

On June 18, 1812, the United States looked at the Royal Navy, roughly 600 ships, the most feared fighting force on the ocean, and declared war anyway. Our navy at the time? Nine seaworthy frigates and a handful of smaller boats. That is not a typo. Nine. Everyone in Europe assumed we would be wiped off the sea in a month. Instead our frigates started winning duels nobody thought were possible. One of them, the USS Constitution, took British cannonballs that bounced off her hull and earned the nickname Old Ironsides, which she still carries today as the oldest commissioned warship afloat. We brought a knife to a gunfight and somehow came home with a reputation.
