Do you remember this from last year. A young family went on holiday to Turkey, the mum Beth was taken ill and went to hospital where she mysteriously died. Officials wanted her buried immediately but the family refused and took her body home where, after a post mortem, they discovered her heart was missing. Does anyone know what happened after that? On This Day — July 25, 1945 In a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria, the ghosts of the gas chambers stood up and refused to disappear. Ninety-four representatives of Jewish Displaced Persons — skeletal men and women who had crawled out of Auschwitz, Dachau, the death marches, and the forests — gathered at St. Ottilien hospital. They formed the leadership of the Central Committee of Liberated Jews and named themselves She’erit Hapletah, the Surviving Remnant. Their cry in Yiddish was simple and absolute: Mir Zaynen Do. We are Here. The Allies still wanted to treat them as leftover Poles, Hungarians, or Romanians. UNRRA and the military authorities tried to house them alongside the same populations that had cheered their deportation or participated in the killing. Many American GIs showed more sympathy for defeated Germans than for the living skeletons in striped rags. Some camps were still under armed guard. The survivors were expected to wait quietly, be grateful, and eventually dissolve back into the nations that had tried to erase them. They refused. Heartbreaking letters from Jewish American soldiers led President Truman to send Earl Harrison to investigate. Harrison’s report was an indictment: “As matters now stand, we appear to be treating the Jews as the Nazis treated them except that we do not exterminate them.” Separate Jewish camps and improved conditions followed. But the survivors demanded more than better rations. They demanded recognition as a people. The only real solution was immigration to the Land of Israel. They only place they were wanted. Their only real home. These were not diplomats or theorists. These were the remnant who had seen their families turned to ash and had somehow remained alive. In a Catholic monastery on German soil, they organized, spoke in their own name, and forced the world to confront the fact that the Jewish people had not been fully extinguished. Eighty-one years ago today, the Surviving Remnant declared they still existed, and that they would not be managed, reclassified, or forgotten. Mir Zaynen Do. Their voice has never stopped.

@RobLooseCannon She lived in Shankill, where I lived at one time. Locals believed that he was the mother's boyfriend, not the daughter's, that the mother asked him to perform an abortion on the daughter, and she died. That it was all a cover-up. Her mother campaigned for his release for years.

@RobLooseCannon My parent use to eat in the restaurant around the time he worked there where he chopped up her body and served it to customers.. He was a vile piece of shit and should have been hung.

In 1963, Shan Mohangi was a 22 year old South African medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. He lived at 95 Harcourt Street and was working nights as a part-time chef in the restaurant in the basement of his building, the Green Tureen. His girlfriend was a 15 year old girl called Hazel Mullen. She worked at the same restaurant. She was reported missing after meeting him in his flat, and thick smoke was observed rising from the restaurant's ovens. He strangled her to death in a jealous rage, then he dismembered her body and tried to burn the remains in the restaurant's oven. Mohangi was convicted of murder and received the mandatory sentence of death by hanging. The verdict was appealed arguing that evidence did not support deliberate intent, which prompted the Court of Criminal Appeal to reduce the conviction to manslaughter and the sentence cut to seven years. Political debate around the case was one of catalysts for the passage of the Criminal Justice Act 1964, which effectively restricted capital punishment in Ireland. He served just four years in Mountjoy then was quietly released and deported back to South Africa. Mohangi changed his name to Narentuk Jumuna, built a successful business in Natal, and quietly worked his way into politics, serving at one point as an MP in the old House of Delegates, the apartheid parliament's chamber reserved for Indian South Africans. In 1996 the National Party in KwaZulu-Natal suspended him over separate fraud claims but they couldnt make any of it stick. By 2009, aged sixty-nine, he was standing as a candidate for the Independent Democrats, the party founded by Patricia De Lille. Then the Saturday Star ran the story. ID secretary-general Haniff Hoosen confronted him directly, and "Jumuna" folded immediately, admitting he was Shan Mohangi and resigning on the spot. Hoosen laid fraud charges against him for concealing the conviction from the party. Under South African law, Mohangi was entitled to stand regardless. His sentence had ended decades before, and nothing barred a child killer convicted in Dublin from running for office in Durban.
