Keir Starmer was a symptom of a political establishment in terminal decline. His resignation follows the predictable failure of an authoritarian project that attempted to manage British capitalism through austerity and imperialist alignment. Despite a significant majority, his refusal to break from Tory fiscal rules or end complicity in foreign wars rendered his leadership untenable. The removal of one individual does not address the underlying crisis of working class representation. The Communist Party calls for a united front of trade unions and the left to challenge neoliberalism and the rise of the far right. The Communist Party stands today in full solidarity with the Windrush generation and their descendants. This is not a moment for the state to perform a shallow apology. It is a moment to reckon with the cold, calculated use of human labour to salvage a failing empire. In 1948, the British ruling class was bankrupt. They looked to the Caribbean not for partners but for a workforce to rebuild the infrastructure of capital. The people who stepped off the Empire Windrush at Tilbury were the architects of our modern services, yet they were met with a state that viewed their presence as a temporary necessity rather than a permanent right. The Hostile Environment is the logical conclusion of this mindset. It is a forensic process of stripping away identity. When the Home Office shredded landing cards, they were attempting to delete the material evidence of a generation’s contribution to the working class. This is the same machinery of erasure used against the Roma, the migrant, and any worker deemed surplus to requirements. It is a clinical attempt to manage the "problem" of people who have outlived their immediate utility to the bosses. Black British history is the history of the foundry, the hospital ward, and the picket line. From the Bristol Bus Boycott to the uprisings in Brixton and Toxteth, the struggle against state racism has always been a struggle against the division of our class. We recognise that the border is a tool of the bosses. It exists to keep us fragmented and to ensure that some workers remain precarious and exploitable. Solidarity means more than remembrance. It means a commitment to the total dismantling of the hostile state and the building of a socialist society where no worker is illegal. We do not celebrate the empire that brought them here: we celebrate the resistance they built once they arrived.
