That we can continually surround ourselves with people who mock what God calls holy, embrace what God condemns, and ridicule the faith we profess — yet somehow remain completely untouched by their influence. God says otherwise. And before somebody tries to turn this into another political argument, this isn't about Donald Trump. It's about discernment. It's about who a professing Christian willingly identifies himself with when the cameras are rolling and the whole world is watching. It's about whether our public associations reinforce the faith we profess or undermine it. Jesus said, “You will recognize them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). That means Christianity isn't merely something we say. Eventually, what we truly value becomes visible — in our priorities, our conduct, our loyalties, and yes, in the people whose approval and companionship we continually seek. Nobody is suggesting Christians should isolate themselves from unbelievers. Christ Himself ate with sinners. But there is an enormous difference between reaching sinners with the Gospel and seeking the applause, acceptance, and fellowship of a culture that openly mocks the God whose name you profess. We are called to be salt and light in the world, not to become indistinguishable from it. So yes, Jelly Roll can talk about Jesus. He can quote Scripture. He can collect every Christian music award they manufacture. But Scripture still says: “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” At some point, Christians have to stop being impressed merely because somebody says the name Jesus and start paying attention to the direction they're actually walking. Because the company we continually choose says something about us. And ultimately, the fruit tells the story.

No ruler has ever exercised authority independently of the sovereign providence of Almighty God. Scripture could hardly be clearer: Romans 13:1 — “For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Daniel 2:21 — “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings.” Daniel 4:17 — “The Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.” And if anyone thinks God only raises up good and godly rulers, Scripture gives us a rather inconvenient example: Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar was no godly Jewish king. He was a pagan Babylonian monarch. He conquered Judah, destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple, carried God's people into captivity, and erected a golden image while demanding worship. Yet God sovereignly used that very man to accomplish God's purposes. In fact, God referred to this pagan king in astonishing language: Jeremiah 27:6 — “Now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant.” Think about that. Nebuchadnezzar wasn't called God's servant because he was righteous. He was God's servant in the sense that, knowingly or unknowingly, he was an instrument in the hands of a sovereign God. Nebuchadnezzar had his plans. Babylon had its plans. But God had His plan—and God's plan was the one being accomplished. And when Nebuchadnezzar became intoxicated with his own greatness, God humbled him until he finally acknowledged who actually ruled: Daniel 4:35 — “He does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand.” That's the point. God's appointment of a ruler is not God's endorsement of that ruler's character, policies, morality, or actions. God can raise up a righteous ruler. God can raise up an ungodly ruler. God can use either one to accomplish His purposes. And He can judge either one according to His perfect righteousness. So Washington. Jackson. Nixon. Reagan. Obama. Trump—and every president before, between, and after them—have governed beneath the sovereign hand of God. Some may have been blessings. Some may have been instruments of judgment. Some may have accomplished things they never remotely understood were part of God's providential purposes. But none of them were accidents. “He removes kings and sets up kings.” — Daniel 2:21 Presidents come and presidents go. Kings rise and kingdoms collapse. Nations flourish and nations disappear. But above every throne, every crown, every Congress, every election, and every presidency stands the eternal King. God does not merely watch history unfold. He rules over it.

And then we wonder why families are disintegrating. Jesus warned that there would be father against son, mother against daughter, and even mother-in-law against daughter-in-law. But notice something critically important: Christ was describing division caused by allegiance to Him and His truth. He wasn't commanding us to manufacture division because somebody hurt our feelings. There is a world of difference between suffering division because you refuse to abandon Christ and creating division because you refuse to forgive another human being. Proverbs 30:17 gives a sobering warning: “The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.” God obviously takes contempt for parents far more seriously than our culture does. So before throwing away your mother or father because the world handed you a fashionable label for everything they ever did wrong, remember: They won't be here forever. There may come a day when the phone number you refused to call no longer has anyone on the other end. There may come a day when the apology you intended to make cannot be heard. There may come a day when all those disagreements suddenly seem terribly small beside a casket. Honor your father and your mother. Not because they're perfect. Because God commanded it. And to every institution, professor, activist, or ideologue making a career out of convincing children that rebellion against their parents and rebellion against God are signs of enlightenment: You may be spending somebody else's tax dollars today—but one day you will answer to God for what you taught their children. And that judgment will not be administered by a university disciplinary board, a social-media mob, or a government bureaucracy. It will be administered by the Judge of all the earth.

WHEN A CULTURE TEACHES CHILDREN TO TURN AGAINST THEIR PARENTS Jesus said something in Luke 12 that our modern culture would rather ignore: Luke 12:53 — “They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” Jesus was warning that truth would bring division—even into families. Allegiance to Christ can place a believer at odds with the people closest to him. Father against son. Son against father. Mother against daughter. Daughter against mother. Mother-in-law against daughter-in-law. Daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. Christ knew exactly how deeply division could penetrate the family. But look at the culture around us today. We have taken family division and practically turned it into a virtue. Modern “woke” culture seems forever inventing new reasons for children to resent, condemn, embarrass, lecture, or completely cut off their parents. A disagreement becomes “toxicity.” Correction becomes “trauma.” Parental authority becomes “control.” A difference in values becomes an excuse for “going no-contact.” And perhaps no institution has facilitated this cultural apostasy more effectively than our universities. Think about the bitter irony of it. Parents work, sacrifice, pay taxes, save money, and sometimes go deeply into debt to educate their children. Then their own tax dollars help support institutions where, far too often, young adults are taught to view the faith, morality, traditions, and values of their parents as something backward from which they must be “liberated.” We help pay the institutions that teach our children to despise what we taught them. We finance professors and programs that can encourage young people to reinterpret ordinary disagreements as oppression, parental boundaries as abuse, biblical morality as hatred, and the Christian faith of their fathers and mothers as something shameful that enlightened people must outgrow. Then those same parents watch a son or daughter come home speaking as though Mom and Dad suddenly became ignorant, hateful, intolerant relics sometime during freshman orientation. And we're supposed to pretend this is enlightenment. It isn't. When an institution deliberately undermines the family, ridicules biblical morality, encourages contempt for parents, and celebrates rebellion against God as intellectual sophistication, it isn't merely educating. It is discipling. And Jesus had terrifying words for people who lead others into sin: Matthew 18:6 — “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” Those are Christ's words, not mine. So yes, I believe there will be a terrible accounting before God for those who knowingly spend their lives corrupting the young, destroying faith, undermining families, and teaching children to despise their fathers and mothers. People sometimes say there must be a “special place in Hell” for certain wickedness. Scripture doesn't give us a map of Hell with reserved sections—but it absolutely teaches greater accountability for those who know better and deliberately lead others astray. Luke 12:47–48 makes that principle unmistakable: greater knowledge brings greater accountability. That ought to terrify anyone entrusted with shaping young minds. Meanwhile, God didn't say: Honor your father and mother—as long as they agree with you. He didn't say: Honor them unless they embarrass you. He didn't say: Honor them until your professor, therapist, favorite influencer, or social-media echo chamber gives you a new vocabulary for despising them. God said: Exodus 20:12 — “Honor your father and your mother…” And the New Testament didn't repeal it.
