Sir Kirani knows what it takes to break barriers, and now he is helping us break barriers in health equity! 🏃🏿‍♂️ We are doing our part in the fight against prostate cancer by uncovering the genetic factors unique to Caribbean ancestry. This research will help pave the way for better early detection and personalised care for generations to come. 🔬

Meet Dr. Jonathan Noël, a Grenadian/Barbadian consultant urological surgeon whose roots run deep in the Caribbean! Trained at some of the world’s leading surgical centres, he now supports the Caribbean Prostate Cancer Genetic Study in Grenada. We are grateful to have his expertise behind this work!

Dr. Dolland Noel, Associate Dean of Clinical Studies at St. George’s University, shared why this research matters so deeply for Grenada. Locally, they have seen advanced prostate cancer present in men in their forties, and current colon cancer screening guidelines that begin at age 45 do not always reflect what clinicians are seeing on the ground, including cases in people younger than that. Data from developed countries does not always tell the full story of what is happening in the Caribbean. That gap is exactly why this study matters. It gives clinicians the opportunity to determine who carries genetic risk and genetic predisposition, so intervention and precision medicine can happen earlier. Dr. Noel thanked us for bringing this opportunity directly to Grenada, allowing the population to better understand its own genetic risk and guiding how clinicians approach screening, follow up, and care going forward. “What are the factors that may be contributing to this disproportionate number of prostate cancer deaths and cases in Grenada as compared to the rest of the Caribbean?” That is the question at the heart of the Caribbean Prostate Cancer Genetic Study, and one Dr. Shawn Charles, Chief Medical Officer of Grenada, believes this research holds real potential to answer. This work can help shape how prostate cancer is screened and managed going forward, from identifying who may need earlier screening to closer follow up care that helps avoid the outcomes we have seen too often. Dr. Charles is encouraging men in Grenada, whether diagnosed or simply aware of a family risk factor, to take part. The information shared could be invaluable in changing how prostate cancer is detected and treated across the island.
