When I was 17, I wanted to be a boy. I was an undiagnosed autistic, who didn't know why I was different from other girls. I didn't know how to talk to them. I found the experience draining and miserable. I never followed trends, and I never fit into the female cliques. I was the weird girl. (In many ways, I still am.) I didn't like wearing feminine clothes. I either found them uncomfortable, or I felt they drew too much attention to my body. Jeans and t-shirt were comfortable - and safe. Not content with her only daughter being a tomboy, my mother frequently told me 'you should have been born a boy'. I was a disappointment to her. Not good enough as a girl. I wouldn't wear the pretty clothes she'd dreamed up dressing her daughter up in. When I discovered the idea of 'being born in the wrong body', suddenly everything seemed to fall into place. Maybe I was so 'bad' at being a girl because I was never supposed to be one. Maybe I was supposed to be a boy. I fell into a deep depression and sought a referral to a gender clinic. I h&rmed myself to cope. I obsessively researched HRT and surgeries, and the more I read about it, the more obsessed I became. My mother kicked me out of my home, unable to cope with my deteriorating mental health. I went to live with my dad, who didn't have an internet connection back in 2009. Slowly, I started to feel better, now that I couldn't obsess over online research and echo chambers anymore. 12 years later, I was diagnosed with autism. It explained a lot about why my life had been the way it was. Why I struggled with certain social situations, why I preferred to dress in simple, fuss-free clothing. Since I started posting on X just over a year ago, I have come to understand in great detail all of the different factors that led to me believe that I was tr&nsgender. Whilst I still struggle with social situations, and I still wear T-shirts and men's jeans most of the time, I am now happy to accept myself as a woman - an adult human female. Not fitting in with other girls didn't mean I was a boy. Not dressing like other girls didn't mean I was a boy. Feeling 'diferent' from other girls didn't mean I was a boy. I have learned a valuable lesson that would have served me well 15 years ago: Being a girl is simply being born female, and what you choose to do with it from there is entirely up to you.
