On Jan 3, Pelosi’s Sergeant at Arms denied my National Guard request and even urged the Capitol Police Board chair not to approve it. On Jan 6, starting at 12:58 pm, he “ran it up the chain” and blocked my urgent Guard requests for over 70 minutes—until 2:09 pm, just before the first window was smashed. Good question: The Senate Sergeant at Arms, Michael Stenger, was also the chair of the U.S. Capitol Police Board. He could have pushed to approve my National Guard requests on both January 3 and January 6, but he didn’t. He knew how much pressure the House Sergeant at Arms, Paul Irving, was under from Speaker Pelosi on security decisions, and he refused to act until Paul acted.

Kim, I’m not sure why you haven’t heard this before, because I’ve been sounding this alarm since my first interview with the Washington Post just days after January 6. I testified about it before Congress in February 2021 and have testified to House committees since then. The January 6 Select Committee, however, would not allow me to testify in its public hearings. I’ve discussed these issues on nearly every major news network, in countless interviews and podcasts, and detailed them in Courage Under Fire—a book that has been cited in congressional testimony and referred to on Capitol Hill as the definitive after-action account of January The real question is: Why hasn’t Congress addressed it?
