These dudes right here are doing real hero shit on @lookner ‘s stream. - Pancaked building. - Extensive cracking in the remaining slabs. - People and equipment running and moving around in proximity to the rubble. - Risk for strong aftershocks almost certain. And here’s where they earn true hero status. - they’re doing this with no shoring to be found anywhere which given the scope/scale of the damage there is no way they’d have enough to go around anyway. Without shoring to support the rubble giving you some layer of protection… These guys are rescuing people hoping to god above that the concrete above you doesn’t shift or break. Bc if it does, your done before you know your done. Despite all the legit extreme risks, they are showing what the epitome of selflessness looks like. Kudos fellas.

I can’t imagine what these guys were thinking and what not. It would be hard for the mind to comprehend in realtime as you see dust plumes coming up from buildings collapsing at the same time while in a boat just offshore. Literally every video is this. You can see the circular entrance in the video from the bottom left in the still photo. I am not being over the top here when I say the damage from this earthquake is going to be near the top, all time, from any earthquake given the depth of both quakes along with the high density population with and most buildings being some type of masonry/concrete slab construction. USGS estimates over 16 million people experienced at least moderate shaking.

A few mins ago I was in a text convo with one of my old FD Chiefs. Seems my rough estimate of 10,000+ deaths is probably well in the ballpark given this USGS estimate. I can’t underscore how bad that damage is from a human survival perspective. Concrete slab and unreinforced masonry buildings are the absolute worst buildings to be in during an earthquake and it looks like most all commercial buildings down there were one or the other. Or a combo.

When I talk about pancakes, this is a textbook pancake collapse for each floor, falls directly on to the floor below it and comes to rest with each floor sandwiched together. If all of these are actually from Venezuela, there will be at least 2 federal USAR Teams deployed to that. VA-TF1 along with a team Cali or Florida would seem most likely to me. Esp given the 1st video. That’s absolutely catastrophic damage in a high density urban environment that carries a sky high risk for secondary collapse with any aftershocks.

It’s so crazy still seeing an old 2003 75’ AerialCat in the wild. I can guarantee I could still drive that ole girl so hard that those fellas would be scared out of their minds… And do it without burning the brakes off the dang thing. That was always the single biggest problem with those 3 ladders, 58,000ish pounds on a single axle. One solid jam on the brakes over 40 and you’re gonna glaze the rear pads like a donut at Krispy Kreme with the hot n fresh sign on. And that big block Cat Engine is no joke. Like the last generation of good caterpillar engines before emissions totally ruined them. I was the Engineer on this thing for about 8-9 years. I know during my time our 3 shifts put about 75,000 miles on it and I know it has pumped well over 1,000,000 gallons of water through the Hale 1500gpm pump on it. Oh the memories.

Great job my dude. I remember a lot of people showing a lot of skepticism about StormNet in the early days treating it almost like snake oil. Now it’s honestly one of the best tools not just for storm chasing but it also excels in the IDSS environment where other models fail or struggle. Hope you get everything you deserve bc you’ve earned it!
