The term “binding myself to God” is referring to our spiritual relationship with God as His child, a bond we can understand more clearly when we consider the parent-child relationship. Covenants increase our bond with God because they strengthen our relationship with Him.

Rather than teach covenants from a contractual perspective, its better to teach covenants in terms of building a loving relationship with God. Church leaders have used words like covenant connection, covenant relationship, covenant bond, and covenantal love.

A primary teachings of the Pauline epistles is that Christ’s covenant allows Him to apply mercy and clean us of our sins: “for this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins” (Romans 11:27).

President James E. Faust taught that in the initiatory ordinance, when we are “washed, [we] will be spiritually cleansed." and that in the anointing, "As [we] are anointed, [we] will be renewed and regenerated in soul and spirit.”

Being temple ready does not mean being flawless. The temple is a place to go to be sanctified. When participating in ancient temple ordinances, the Lord told Moses, “And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him” (Exodus 40:13).

Preach My Gospel manual: “Keeping the covenant of baptism is the first step in binding ourselves to God so the Holy Ghost can cleanse, strengthen, and change our nature for the better. Experiencing this sanctifying influence is called spiritual rebirth."

The temple of the Lord is a hiding place, of sorts, for those who feel troubled. “I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion.”(Ps 27:4-5)

Our Savior did not feel your pains as Himself going through your trial, He felt it as if He was you. He stood in your shoes and experienced your pains the exact way that you would. He knows exactly what you thought and what you felt, and He knows how to comfort you.

We were once in the temple doing sealings and we asked the sealer a question. He told us about his own family difficulties he had as a child in a broken family. The sealer then explained how Christ's role in covenantal and used a powerful phrase: “sealing is healing.”

Sometimes, when we are in pain, it is hard to do “Church things” because it reminds us of the prayers we feel are unanswered and the pain that we are feeling. However, it is critical we do the acts of faith that keep us connected to God, because He is our only source of peace

Sister Reyna Aburto: “If we think about it, we all come to the temple to be spiritually healed and to give those on the other side of the veil the opportunity to be healed as well. When it comes to healing, we all need the Savior desperately."

James E. Faust said that a purpose of the temple is to be a “sanctuary in which to receive the sanctifying and cleansing ordinances of the temple,” adding that “as the Saints come into the sacrosanct washing and anointing rooms and are washed, they will be spiritually cleansed.”

Similar to baptism, the covenants and ordinances in the temple help bring cleansing. Most of the sacrifices and ordinances performed at the temple in ancient days were about purification so that “the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him” (Leviticus 19:22)
