The forecasts came with dates attached and credentials behind them. 💡1970: The Famine That Never Came Stanford biologist Paul Ehrlich, author of The Population Bomb (1968), warned that "in the 1970s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now." He added that 65 million Americans would die between 1980 and 1989 in a "Great Die-Off," and that by 2000 England would be "simply a small group of impoverished islands." The decades passed. England is still there. Ehrlich later said his forecast had been "way too optimistic." 💡1975: The Coming Ice Age Newsweek's April 28 issue ran "The Cooling World," an article warning that a coming ice age would cause catastrophic famines. Ecologist Kenneth Watt told a 1970 Earth Day audience that if present trends continued, the global mean temperature would fall four degrees by 1990 and eleven degrees by 2000. In 2006, Newsweek issued a correction admitting it had been "so spectacularly wrong about the near-term future." 💡1988–1989: The Nations That Would Vanish In September 1988, an Agence France-Presse wire story quoted Maldives officials that a rising sea level was "threatening to completely cover" the country's 1,196 islands within thirty years. In June 1989, Noel Brown of the U.N. Environment Programme told the Associated Press that governments had a ten-year window before entire nations were "wiped off the face of the Earth." Both deadlines have expired. The nations are still on the map. 💡2000: Children Wouldn't Know What Snow Was On March 20, 2000, The Independent quoted senior climate scientist David Viner of the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit. Winter snowfall, Viner said, would become "a very rare and exciting event," and "children just aren't going to know what snow is." The article's own headline: "Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past." Britain kept snowing. 💡2007–2009: The Ice-Free Arctic and 96 Months In his December 2007 Nobel lecture, Al Gore cited a U.S. Navy study warning the Arctic could be ice-free in summer "in as little as 7 years." "Seven years from now," he repeated. Two years later, Prince Charles announced humanity had 96 months to prevent "irretrievable climate and ecosystem collapse." The Arctic still has summer ice. Charles's deadline expired in July 2017. 💡The Fear Kept Working After the Forecasts Failed None of the people who made these predictions was demoted, defunded, or asked to account for the miss. Ehrlich collected a MacArthur "genius" grant in 1990, after every one of his 1970s deadlines had already lapsed. Gore's climate documentary won an Oscar the same year he won the Nobel Peace Prize. The institutes stayed funded and the policies kept moving. The failed deadlines never showed up on anyone's balance sheet. 💡Then You Started Asking Why the Deadlines Kept Passing You raised the question, publicly and in good faith. Every old deadline had a public record and a public author, and the record showed the forecast had failed. Nobody reached for a chart. Somebody reached for a label. 💡The Label Was Older Than You Realized In February 2007, Ellen Goodman wrote in the Boston Globe that "global warming deniers are now on a par with Holocaust deniers." The framing spread quickly. Ask about a failed prediction, and people looked at you the way they looked at cruelty. 💡What You Were Really Learning Climate change is real, and human activity plays a part in it. What the failed forecasts reveal is a political mechanism that has grown up around a real problem and made its central conclusion sacred. A sacred conclusion cannot be tested. The mechanism fundraises on fear and treats affirmation as the price of belonging. A generation learned that some questions cost more than they are worth.
