Agree, Laboratory animals in the UK are protected by harm: benefit analysis, ethical review, humane end-points, a philosophical defence (the 3R's) and the Law itself. Pet animals have little of this and can be treated inhumanely by vets who do not prioritize animal welfare.
@ProfNoelFitz Veterinary surgery lacks routine institutional supervision and ‘standards of care’ are not well-defined which makes definition of experimental procedures difficult, but experimental treatments in human medicine require formal Ethical Review to reduce the risk of abuses.
