Roughly 50% of people use HELOCs for home improvement projects. This means that some people will justify leveraging their homes and equity in their home......to build equity. This does not make sense. If it's a cosmetic improvement, save money and pay cash.
I don't recommend HELOCs and here are my reasons - 1. Your house is the collateral - if you are unable to make repayments, the bank COULD take your house. 2. Adjustable interest rates. 3. Many have closing fees similar to mortgage closing fees. It's just my opinion, but I'm not a fan.
“Stop starting, start finishing” is a term that gets used in Kanban, which helps focus teams on getting work done. Use that same thinking when it comes to making the decision of whether to start investing or paying off debt. Finish paying off the debt, then focus on investing.
@GuyTalksFinance Agree with this. Debt is so much more than a numbers/math problem. Debt is a mental burden, getting out from under that is huge. And the money you start putting towards that debt, when the debt is gone, use that money to start investing.

Putting 3% down on a $350k home with a 30 year mortgage (7% rate). You will pay an extra $164 a month for PMI for over 11 years for a total PMI payment of $22,826. Please, please please put more than 3% down.

Working to build discipline to simply wait to purchase something, can help you fight the urge to make an impulse buy. Never say “never” start saying “just not right now”.
@dividendology 3-6 months ideally. But I’d you’re just starting our, your goal should be to have $1000-$2000 set aside for emergencies and then build from there.
@MoneyandM Me too! Sometimes I think we forget to stop and ask each other what your long and short term financial goals are. My wife and I recently had one a month ago and it was very productive and eye opening for me.
When was the last time you asked your partner about their dreams/goals? Set some time to talk and learn about each others dreams. Once you’re done, write them down and each person creates one action item to get them started. Research a property, save $100, research cost, begin the plan.
Not sure who needs to hear this, but just putting dishes in a dishwasher doesn’t guarantee they will be clean. You need to load a dishwasher correctly 😀 happy Friday!
If you’re struggling with a problem and want to get to the root cause of it, ask “Why” five times and often you’ll fine the true culprit. Most people stop asking “why” after one time and only mask the symptoms and never solve the root cause.

@TKopelman You are probably correct with this statement, however one thing that he said that resonates with me regarding the debt snowball, is that getting out of debt isn’t a simple math problem, it’s trying to establish small wins to build momentum. It’s more mindset than math.
