I take notes on every introductory press conference I watch. NFL, NBA, MLB, College Sports... Just trying to excavate any bit of value that leader may share. Here are my notes from new @dallasmavs Head Coach Dusty May's (@CoachDustyMay) introductory press conference: Theme: "Getting back to JOY." Masai Ujiri Opening Remarks: -Thanked the fans for their patience. Reminded everyone that meaningful things take time and that the organization was committed to finding the right leader, not simply the quickest solution. "Everyone in our program wants to bring something special to the table. We're all on the same page that we're here to win. We want to bring joy. We want to bring joy back to basketball here." -Joy was a recurring theme throughout Masai's remarks. It felt intentional. -Winning matters, but so does restoring belief. Organizations that have been through adversity often need hope before they need results. Dusty May Opening Remarks: -Acknowledged how difficult it was to leave Michigan. -Ultimately, the Mavericks represented the perfect intersection of "people, opportunity, and alignment." -Thanked his wife and sons, saying they had far more to do with his success than he did. -Doesn't view achievement as an individual accomplishment. On What Made This Job So Enticing: "There's different criteria for everybody when it comes to jobs. This one checked all the boxes for me." -He fully expected to return to Michigan. The deeper he went into the interview process, the more convinced he became this was the right opportunity. -Reminded that great opportunities often reveal themselves gradually, then suddenly. On the Importance of Kyrie Irving: -Recognized Kyrie's championship experience immediately. "He knows what it takes to win." -Points out Kyrie knows what it takes to win an NBA championship so he’d be foolish not to lean on him a ton. References how smart Kyrie is… “One of the best PG’s to play the game and also a jazz musician.” -Displays lots of humility in his eagerness to learn from Kyrie, not just coach him. On Cooper Flagg: -Shared a story about watching Cooper work out in an empty gym before he was drafted. -Every repetition was treated like Game 7 of the NBA Finals. No audience. No cameras. No external reward. Just complete commitment to the rep in front of him. -Believes Championship habits rarely begin under bright lights. Rare to have that trait. Excited to work with a player like that. On Expectations For This Team: "We can play winning basketball sooner than later." -Confident in his ability because he believes in what he's selling. -References his formula for outperforming expectations: 1️⃣ Play unselfish basketball. 2️⃣ Compete relentlessly. 3️⃣ Share success. 4️⃣ Care deeply about one another. -Says the coaching staff exists to serve the players every day by providing a plan that allows them to become the best version of themselves. -Great coaching serves BEFORE it demands. On His Journey From Student Manager Under Bobby Knight to NBA Head Coach: -Never set out to coach in the NBA. Never even expected to coach in college. He simply wanted to become a great high school coach. -At every stop, he tried to learn, improve, and help others grow. -Big careers are usually focused on just the next small step in front of them along the career path. 👣 On Whether College Basketball's volatility led Him to the NBA: "I wouldn't say it's a big reason. The big reason was the people in this building." -The deciding factor wasn't leaving college basketball. It was joining these people. -He acknowledged college basketball has become significantly more complicated. "I love teaching. I love coaching. I love being a part of a team. You don't get to do as much of that as you used to." One of my favorite quotes of the press conference: "The things you love to do, you typically do them well." -Passion isn't everything. But sustained excellence almost always follows genuine enjoyment. He wasn't getting that in College Basketball currently, and understandably. On Being a Basketball Junkie: -Expressed deep gratitude for everything basketball has given him. He's spent time studying the game all over the world. During COVID, he intentionally explored international basketball to broaden his perspective. "This is a beautiful game. It's beautiful here and it's beautiful there. But it has to be played a certain way, and that's what I'm hoping to teach here." -Believes curiousity compounds. -Dusty continues a trend of the best coaches being and seeing themselves as lifelong students before they're lifelong teachers. What Translates Most From College to the NBA? "Our adaptability." -Rather than forcing players into a predetermined system, he'll study the roster and build a system around their strengths. "Doing what our guys do best. Not being married to anything. Continuously trying to find the best way to play." -Strong convictions. Loose attachments. -Hold onto principles. Adjust the methods.. On His Philosophy As Head Coach: Two primary goals: 1️⃣ Be enjoyable to watch- Everyone be proud of how we play the game. 2️⃣ Be equipped to win any type of game- Regular season shootout or defensive slugfest. -Whether it's a 130-point shootout or a defensive battle, they want to be capable of winning both. That requires: -Lineup versatility -Depth -Selflessness -Players committed to playing off one another instead of beside one another -Versatility creates resilience. On His Criteria For Taking an NBA Job: -The first meeting with Masai and ownership immediately stood out. He felt alignment, camaraderie, and most importantly, TRUST. -Several other familial factors came into play, but he made it clear he was not seeking validation in his criteria, was trying to make sure he could find purpose in his new routines. -I thought this was a powerful perspective on the duality of reaching our dream job, but the uprooting and change that comes with that. Speaking about Cooper Flagg: "A superstar who plays hard, cares about his team, and is unselfish. That's uncommon." -For Coach May and Masai, everyone in the building shares the same objective, same page 📖: Winning. Not winning arguments. Not protecting status. But winning together. On Who Has Influenced His Coaching Philosophy Most: "The players I've coached." -He credits his players more than any coach. "I've learned so much from intelligent, hard-working guys." "I'm curious and inquisitive in nature, so I'm always trying to figure out what my players are seeing, thinking, and feeling." -He openly acknowledged that he didn't play at the highest level. Rather than pretending otherwise, he uses it as motivation to ask better questions. -Curiosity lowers ego. And listening expands perspective. There's a huge certainty gap going from College to NBA and having low ego and an enriched perspective can help shrink that gap! Masai On Building the Staff: -Dusty has earned complete trust to build the staff around him. -The organization will support him and provide guidance whenever needed. Trust creates freedom but notes it doesn't remove accountability. His responsibility is to help Dusty whenever he needs it. On the Culture at Michigan: "There was never any envy. Never any jealousy. Those guys were each other's biggest fans." -Reminds me of the concept of Mudita. = Finding genuine joy in someone else's success. -Celebrating teammates instead of competing with them. -We're not competing against the people wearing our jersey. -We're competing against everyone else. -Internal competition should sharpen teammates, not divide them. When Did the NBA Become the Dream? Says it never really did. His perspective shifted after becoming a father. His priorities became simple: -Enjoy the people he worked with. -Enjoy the players he coached. -Become the best coach he could possibly become. -The destination changed because he kept growing, not because he was chasing titles. -Masai On Expectations: "We'll try our best to win, and to grow in this organization." -Growth and winning weren't presented as competing priorities. One should fuel the other. ⛽️ On Play Style: 1. Play blue-collar basketball. 2. Do the dirty work. 3. Take responsibility for helping the team function together. 4. Check every box. 5. Do whatever the team needs. 6. Do it with enthusiasm. One word Coach May believe in regardless of league or level: sacrifice. On Building the Coaching Staff: Hiring philosophy: -Fit together. -Complement one another. -Share the same value system. -Leave ego at the door. -Serve the players completely. "We're going to be a group that is here for the players 100%." -A great staff doesn't need everyone to think the same. It needs everyone to pull in the same direction. On Where His Confidence Comes From: "I believe in the guys in the locker room and the guys I go to work with every day. That's who gives me confidence to do my job." -His confidence isn't rooted in proving himself. It's rooted in trusting the people around him. 🌳 -He's leaned on coaches who successfully made the jump from college to the NBA. Said he plans to continue doing so. -Learning doesn't stop because the title changes. If anything, leadership demands an even greater commitment to humility.

Haven’t posted on social in quite some time but can’t stay quiet in this time of loss. I’m struggling to tell all what Bobby Cox meant to me and so many others in Braves Country. He was the leader of men and a second father to so many Atlanta Braves thru the yrs. I’m so sad today, but as I sit here watching my two youngest boys play in their championship games on the day he passed, I can’t help but shout the same things he did from the corner of the dugout. ‘Come on kid, u got this!’ We are gonna miss him so much, but his legacy is forever cemented with the success of this franchise for the last 35+ yrs. He started it as GM, continued as manager, and passing the torch to others, the Atlanta Braves will continue to be force that Bobby Cox always wanted us to be. We love you Skipper. You were our rock. I love you more than words can express. My boys won both of their games…..Bobby had a hand, I have no doubt!

Just writing this gave me anxiety, imagine what that young ballplayer is going through in the moment the next time you want to start barking out instructions on how to hit! 🤐 #BaseballTruth
