U.S. Soccer is exploring a complete overhaul of the youth soccer system amid renewed scrutiny of pay-to-play following the USMNT's Round of 16 World Cup exit — with the goal of making the game more accessible and affordable 🇺🇸⚽️ U.S. Soccer COO Dan Helfrich: “We are not seeking to make the current system more affordable. We’re trying to create a new system that then we make highly affordable. It’s a really important distinction.” Arsène Wenger, speaking alongside Helfrich at U.S. Soccer’s headquarters outside Atlanta: “From outside, I felt that people from a poor background had no access to the game. That is quite a big part of the population that usually in Europe, the best football players come from poor backgrounds. We want maybe a job to do as well to make it possible and available for everybody and after to be consistent because it’s not a short-term fix.” The discussion centered on how the federation can continue growing the sport after what U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson called an “incredibly successful” World Cup that “has fundamentally changed the trajectory of the sport in the United States.”

The USMNT will be stuck at the World Cup until it adopts Germany's blueprint In 2000 Germany finished last at the Euros and decided it was time overhaul the system. They built 390 regional training bases to make sure one was within 25 km of every kid in country. They hired 1,200 full-time coaches, invested €48 million per year and mandated that every pro club build a certified youth academy or lose its license The cost to families was $0 and 14 years later, 21 of the 23 players who won the World Cup came directly from the system

@BayernAusBoston @NutmegStOfMind Tajon Buchanan and Jack Harrison probs the best current college players. NCAA had some exciting reforms, I think there’s a chance it could be helpful. Not a black and white issue imo

@MLSMoves I like this take a lot! Separately, someone needs to be hired to direct overall MLS youth academies from Clairefontaine, Barca, BVB, or Ajax. Money + better planning is the key imo

@BayernAusBoston I think it’s player to player. If ur a GK who breaks into ur MLS side at 23 and get to EU at 26, you could hv a 10+ year career in EU. Player to player but at some point to be a top guy u need to get to Europe

You believed. You filled stadiums. You brought the game into homes and communities across the country. Most of all, you showed everyone what this crest means. Thank you.
