Hi Nelson, at the Standard Group the situation is sliding from bad to worse as Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich Chepkoit continues to toy with the management of one of Kenya’s oldest media houses, established in 1902. The biggest casualties are the employees, who have gone unpaid this month. Even their half-salaries remain uncertain. Acting CEO Richard Chaacha has chosen silence, deepening frustration among staff. This is a sharp reversal from the relative stability under Marion Gathioga-Mwangi, who had managed to bring in advertisers and restore confidence. But immediately after her exit, salaries began to delay. What had looked like a slow recovery under CEO Muthoni has now collapsed, pushing the company further into crisis. Alex’s abrupt policy shifts have rattled advertisers and disrupted newsroom structures. Without notice, he scrapped desks in politics, sports, crime, health, economy, and agriculture, lumping all coverage under the national desk led by Augustine Oduor. Insiders say the move is meant to edge out Input Editor Wellington Nyongesa. The result has been a watered-down product that has robbed the newspaper, TV, and radio of their sharp edge. The impact is visible: stacks of unsold newspapers are carted back to the company. One driver summed it up: “Readers see a big headline but no content. Sometimes the headline isn’t even the story.” Not stopping at the newsroom, Alex pushed out the head of radio, Mr. Kwambai, triggering an exodus of reporters and producers. Untrained staff now fill shows, while some slots like the crucial 9 a.m. to midday stretch air without presenters. His most controversial ally is Jacinta Kiraguri, a supposed retiree turned enforcer. Once part of a team that ousted Alex, she has now returned as his fixer, seizing multiple roles across editorial, production, and even the technical department. Jacinta has sidelined seasoned professionals, including TV head Lillian Odera, whom she accused of being “lazy and sick,” and has tried to undermine Nyongesa’s authority in news gathering. Her most baffling directive ordered producers to create content without a budget or risk being laid off, a move that exposed the financial paralysis at KTN. With prime slots at risk of running dry in weeks, KTN’s decline is stark. Once a powerhouse, it now ranks fifth behind even KBC while the newspaper fights desperately to stay afloat.
