🚨 DSA Co-Chairs Squirm When Pressed on Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua This is a longer clip, but it captures the best parts of a broader discussion DSA national co-chairs Ashik Siddique and Megan Romer had with The Moment hosts Jorge Ramos and Paola Ramos. Jorge repeatedly presses them on whether Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua are dictatorships. They repeatedly avoid giving him a direct answer. Romer eventually responds that “Cubans have access to their democracy in a way that we do not,” pointing to Cuba’s 2022 Family Code referendum as evidence. That referendum was only four years ago, making it an especially curious answer to Jorge Ramos repeatedly pressing her on decades without multiparty elections. Ashik Siddique fares little better. Asked whether Cuba is a dictatorship, he pivots to the U.S. embargo and the state of American politics, responding that “it’s hard for us to judge other countries being dictatorships when we have Donald Trump as president.” Paola eventually steps in and identifies the problem at hand. DSA can be anti-imperialist without becoming apologists for these regimes. They should still be able to recognize and explain what makes them authoritarian. When it comes to international politics, DSA is often at its most revealing. Siddique and Romer are not even among the organization’s most die-hard internationalists. This is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how radical DSA’s international politics can get.

Hasan Piker says out loud all the things that other leftists either don’t think at all, or have the good sense to not say out loud in front of a microphone and camera recording them — “It doesn’t matter if rape happened on October 7th,” and that he described the sexual violence of 10/7 as “rape fantasies.”  Piker said has “no issue” with Hezbollah, that “Hamas is a thousand times better than the fascist settler colonial apartheid state of Israel,” “I would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time” and “the biggest terrorist internationally is the Republican Party.” He’s claimed Orthodox Jews are “inbred,” contended Zionism is “mental illness,” called the Houthis “moral,” and said his favorite flag is the one of Hezbollah. Oh, and he uses a shock collar on his dog.

Why do I feel so strongly about Hasan Piker’s rise in the Dem party? I started Moms Demand Action the day after the Sandy Hook School shooting in 2012. Simultaneous to the success of the org I started, I watched right wing extremism rise in opposition. Alex Jones had been running InfoWars and broadcasting conspiracy theories for years. He had a substantial but relatively niche audience. But that changed after the mass shooting, which he used to promote the false claim that the massacre was a hoax or “false flag” operation. Clips of Jones lying about Sandy Hook circulated widely, including among people who weren't regular InfoWars viewers. His confrontational style made him go viral. Then, InfoWars began selling supplements and other products alongside Jones's political/conspiracy programming. Free Speech Systems, the company behind InfoWars, generated more than $500 million in revenue from 2012–2022. By 2016, Jones was one of the most recognizable figures in the broader American right-wing media ecosystem. Extremists on the left are now following the same virulent, highly profitable model: Normalize extreme rhetoric by repeating inflammatory claims. Encourage an “us vs. them” worldview by leading audiences to believe “others” are fundamentally bad, dishonest, or threatening. Turn outrage into engagement. 
Foment anger and mistrust via provocative content. Mobilize an audience against people they criticize, resulting in harassment and harm. Spread questionable or misleading information at enormous scale. I don’t believe we should silence, deplatform, or socially destroy demagogues on either side of the political spectrum. Conversations are not the same as campaigning. But if Democrats can condemn harassment, misinformation, and dehumanizing rhetoric from the right, they should call it out it when it comes from demagogues on their own side, too. The difference between the left and the right (until now) has been our willingness to think independently and recognize right from wrong, rather than blindly defend our own side. If we embrace Piker, we risk sacrificing our common ground, our credibility, and ultimately the base of our own party.

U.S. acceptance of Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz is an extraordinary outcome only made conceivable by an administration that squandered legitimacy, alienated allies, attempted regime change in a war it had not adequately prepared for and that is being forced to accept a catastrophic outcome without viable alternatives. Counterfactuals are impossible to prove but in other circumstances Iran's closure of Strait by brazenly attacking maritime traffic and neighbors' civilian infrastructure would likely have justified and led to a united, global response--like the U.S.-led naval escort mission during the Iran-Iraq war, the global coalition that reversed Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1991, the multinational naval force enforcing UN sanctions in the Gulf in the 1990s, or the UN Security Council sanctions on the Iranian nuclear program in the 2010s--that led to the JCPOA. Instead US and other countries are now being forced to accept an outcome that would have been unthinkable before the war but seems to have become unavoidable because of it.
