Most trips would not be diverted to a new bridge & a 3rd river crossing would not fix safety deficiencies on the current bridge.
A third, supplemental bridge to either side of the I-5 bridge was briefly considered but later shelved...
68-75% of trips crossing the I-5 Interstate Bridge in peak travel hours have origins or destinations within the project area itself.
The I-5 bridge over Columbia River is the only part of I-5 from WA/Canada to Cali/Mexico with a traffic light-due to the bridge lift.

Would be interesting to hear Maurice Cox's POV on aesthetics given need to keep bridge a low-profile due to airspace restrictions.
Columbia River Crossing, the new I-5 Bridge project, is one of the region's largest infrastructure projects of all time.
The locally preferred alternative/ new I-5 bridge design would generate lower greenhouse gas emissions vs. doing nothing.
