Here I am pulling my weight a public sector healthcare worker, as requested by the minister. At worked by 6:30 and now I’m stymied by staff shortage and no linen in theatre. I guess I’ll have to cancel the OT list. Waste of a day.

The government converted workers on contract to posts, so the overall staff personnel never changed. Most medical services are still understaffed. Posting the 1 CT machine that KPH has and making seem like everything is well is disingenuous, when a major hospital, that admits 20K patient per year require at least 3 scanners. Not to mention that scanner has to serve the Bustamante hospital and the entire region (and island) in the case of emergencies. The machine is over worked and will be out of commission soon. The MRI machine has been out of commission for over 10 years and has been demagnetized because some smart person placed a metal container on top of the building that houses it. Only 7 adult ICU bed at a type A hospital (that serves the entire island), when the recommended ratio is 20% of total bed capacity.

🧐 Which leader ? The CEO, SMO, RD, RTD ????? A government that moves budget - $60B in 2015 to $140B in 2025 - hires 24k workers on staff - gov should also take responsibility for running a hospital and department in a hospital? #TwistedLogic

Do we have an independent body that can tour these health facilities unanounced and give publicly available reports? If so much more funding is being put into the health system how is there a shortage of literally everything. Even stuff you wouldn't think of (like paper)

The Jamaica Medical Doctors' Association (JMDA) is this afternoon demanding that Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton retract what it describes as a misleading statement about last month's protest by medical interns. 1/4

There is also a shortage of linen at KPH, no drains for surgeries, and the AC is still not working.

Do some doctors and nurses in the public system have stink attitudes? Yes! Do some doctors and nurses in the public system deliver sub-optimal care? Absolutely! Are stink attitudes and sub-optimal care the main problem in the public system? Absolutely not! As usual, politicians are gaslighting people. When patients are receiving care from chairs for hours, instead of beds, that problem is not in the same universe as rude doctors. When hospitals don't have functioning MRI machines and other diagnostic equipment, you should pay no mind to the minister who is yapping about underperforming medical staff. Such yapping can only be an attempt to deflect and distract. When the functionality of operating theatres in the main public hospital in the damn capital of our country is limited for extended periods because of AC issues... When the most important hospital in the west of our country has been operating at less than full capacity for nearly a damn decade because of repairs cum reconstruction... A minister in post for more than a decade presiding over the shambles that is the public healthcare system, has some nerve pointing even him lickle finga at healthcare workers.

As a leader, don’t blame the persons you are appointed to lead, whether directly or indirectly. The failure or success of a system is a reflection of the leader, no matter what. At the same time, there are some absolutely horrible health care workers in the system who don’t seem to care about the job or patients they chose to treat. They fail to even do the bare minimum. Accountability matters.

@christufton What was the dollar rate in 2015, has it he cost equipment increased since then.

I Felt this to my core. There is culture of turning ordinary hardworking trying citizens into criminals through strict liability ticketing executions. If you know this lady help me find her so I can pay the ticket for her. this is how they get the tax

Hi I am Dr Khia Duncan, ENT surgeon. Jamaica is currently experiencing a Heat wave and we need to stay indoors as much as possible and keep hydrated. Several of my patients have nasal congestion and runny nose especially at night and this could be due to AC. Air conditioning (AC) can trigger or worsen rhinitis in two ways. Back in Jan. 2025 in response to a post of mine on the situation in UHWI A&E...based on what I witnessed then & several visits since with my mom, my only surprise is how long the staff has persevered without protest in an extremely dangerous situation for themselves & patients

UHWI sees between 3000-3500 patients each month at A&E. KPH twice this amount. The solution is both with reducing demand ( personal responsibility) & supply ( more doctors and nurses etc). As you raise concerns, please also include reducing demand.
