@dampedspring I keep wondering why we pay interest at all. It's an egregious wealth transfer. Why do we suggest we borrow our own money? We don't. It had to be spent first to create the money needed to buy the bonds. It's a gift to those who need risk free collateral.

@MMTmacrotrader Anything bad the debt might have done (inflation maybe) is already in the books. Public debt equals private savings. There is no reason for the gov to pay interest as the gov never needs to borrow it's own currency.

@dampedspring I keep struggling with this idea of investing money into an asset. The money always ends up in the bank account of the seller. The only alternative is a Treasury security as that temporarily removes the cash from the private economy.

@BobEUnlimited There is no way the government could have borrowed $36 trillion before it had spent it. The money would not have existed. Net private savings is the total outstanding debt.
