@billhal02986287 Nothing fancy. Just pure grain alcohol. Used to dissolve the solid deposits and kill of lingering spores and such.

Cleaning is Job No.1 when restoring old pipes. It can be messy and tedious, but it’s always time well spent. During the process, the pipe will start to tell me things about itself that aren’t apparent at first glance. That information informs the work that I do later.

Reshaped the sloppy replacement stem (not my work) on this ‘64 Dunill Shell 104 into something that’s a bit more Dunhill-ish, including a concave, “comfort-bit” button that’s not evident in my photos.

@luisvilelaRA It looks very well done. Stem making is probably the most difficult part of pipe repair. Try vinyl or plastic tapes instead of fabric or paper tapes for shank masking. They hold up well under abrasive tools and don't absorb water from wet sanding.

@luisvilelaRA Banding the end of the shank helps to slow the progress of the crack, especially when combined with a strong epoxy, but it doesn't stop it. It may creep forward at a rate of 0.5mm a year or it could jump 10mm all at once. A stop hole guarantees the crack is arrested.

@piperedux I'm sorry, my friend, but I'm honestly not sure if I understand your question. Smoking a pipe with a cracked shank will do absolutely nothing to stop the crack. If anything, it will only aggravate the problem.

@luisvilelaRA In practice, it's very simple though. Drill a small hole (0.6mmm in this case) at the *very* end of the crack, insert plug that is slightly smaller in diameter than the ID of the hole, epoxy and clamp.

@ForgingElements Yep. The physics are the same in any solid material. The stresses at the tip of any crack are nearly infinite. Adding a radius to the tip distributes the stress, reducing it to a practical zero.

@stummels @bass_piper3486 No, it's not the K&K versions, but those will still be available outside of the US. STG just made the deal and will be reintroducing the blends under different branding. So, it will be the same recipe as what recently went off the market.
