@aj_cott @tajpmahal @MRsalakas @ESIaustralia @Jetstopia Domains that were arguably created under in the industrial model of education, to prepare workers for jobs in factories. Don’t many taxonomies measure “expert” as the ability to transfer skills and knowledge to create ‘new’ knowledge, i.e SOLO and Blooms?

@aj_cott @tajpmahal @MRsalakas @ESIaustralia @Jetstopia What opportunities to we give students to become experts if we restrict skills and knowledge to arbitrary domains?

Just a thought on Morrison’s fear of public schools: those who worry their ‘values’ will be undermined if their children are exposed to different ones reveal they have little faith in both their values and their children.

@gregwhitby And a change in culture that is maintained to go with it. I’ve worked in some open plan learning spaces that buzzed with the energy of students working on projects, and some serving as multiple classrooms with invisible walls and grumpy teachers complaining about noise.

Maximising ATAR should not be the main focus for schools. Uni courses and jobs require a broad mix of abilities and knowledge, so we should not rely on just one general score for education and employment opportunities. bit.ly/2JeK7W1 #AssessATAR

When students are challenged to use the information they have learned to solve problems, make decisions, conduct investigations, and create hypotheses regarding real-world issues, they are much more likely to see what they are learning as important. #studentengagement

@marcellinusb @melbpoly @BanyuleNillumTS @WhittleseaTS Hazel Gl n College Yr 9s are about to start on community projects. Could they apply for this with a social enterprise idea?

@aj_cott There’s no time to do these things well with teachers trying to cover the breadth of an overcrowded subject specific curriculum, while having little opportunity in the average meeting schedule to collaborate with other domains in order to plan and execute such projects

@aj_cott Real world problem could be climate change, student action could be organising a walk to school campaign. The learning is in the research of causes, communication, collaboration, critical and creative thinking, citizenship, etc.

@aj_cott I’ve had year 9s pitch suggestions to the mayor among others on improvements they’d like to see around their community, based on research, surveys they conducted, and then received grant funding to carry projects out.

@aj_cott None, if they’re not given the opportunity and aren’t surrounded by people who believe in them. If given the opportunity, they could have an impact on just about any.

@aj_cott Offer Ss opportunities to apply subject knowledge/skills to solving real world problems. Breaking down the “I’m not into math, I’m an artsy person” mindset, to facilitate the realisation that skills from different subjects are not mutually exclusive. A focus on the 6Cs etc.
