🚨🚨 We’ve hit 39.4°C in Gloucestershire today ➡️ emergency THI level of 91 🚨🚨
Cows will be struggling to maintain normal behaviour, suffer increased internal body temperature and respiration rates. Damage can be long lasting from such spikes so alleviating THI is key 🐄🌡️☀️
What to do/advise at this late stage - open sheds up to maximise natural ventilation, cover roof lights if pos., ensure plenty of water trough space and refresh rate (fill IBCs if possible so cows have some sort of back up), feed at least 2x daily so there is fresh feed overnight
Last week heat moved north as the south of England saw 7 days of average THI 65 and above whereas that didn’t reach Scotland until Sunday!
This week is the main concern as cows will experience a severe heat event across nearly all of GB - THI 80 is classified as severe heat…
heat stress - 31°C @ 50-55% RH which will be passed in most places several times this week. Emergency levels of heat stress THI 90+ - 40°C @ 40% RH which is a potential in the Midlands and south of England by Thursday - remember collecting areas and parlours in this!!!!
Respiration rate is quick and easy way to check your cows for heat stress…
📱 Set phone timer for 15 secs
▶️ Press start
⏱️Count breaths
🧮Multiply by 4 = bpm!
💨🐄
40-60 no stress
60-75 mild
75-85 mild/moderate
85+ severe 🚨🚨

Huge issue on farms and often a gateway disease, owing to immune compromise, with BRD being the obvious next challenge, way before any production disadvantages in later life…
Research suggests calves that recover from scours may still carry a production disadvantage years after the ailment has been treated. dairyherd.com/news/hidden-co…
@HefinR Agreed on the TB issue as that’s always the challenge in the background but feels like the ability to used sexed semen has allowed efficiency in youngstock management but feels like an opportunity, depending on geography and TB status on farms/likelihood of failing test
Lack of animals in, and coming through the system keeping cow price up? Maybe time to rethink breeding strategy to carry a few 'spares' to sell going forwards...
GB milking herd 1.59m as of April 26, lowest number recorded, and a 2.0% decline yr-on-yr. ahdb.org.uk/news/gb-dairy-…
The heat went, literally, as quickly as it arrived! Most sheds struggled to get into the 20’s °C so cows remained comfortable. An absolute high of only 23.5°C (THI 71) in South Yorkshire on Tuesday compared to the previous week peaking at 35.7°C (THI 85) in the south of England!

Mary Ankers, Cheshire, England, returned to the family dairy. Hear about how Ankers made the decision to return to the farm in “Voices from the Barn” hosted by USDEC CEO Krysta Harden. Watch this and other International Year of the Woman Farmer podcasts: bit.ly/4ebrPR1
They told us. We obeyed. We suffered.
Cut red meat.
We did and heart disease didn't vanish.
Swap butter for margarine.
We did but we "still need" to take statins.
Eat oatmeal instead of eggs.
We did and type 2 diabetes is everywhere.
Cut down on salt.
We did and high blood pressure is rampant.
Eat lots of whole grains.
We did and allergies boomed.
We're fat. We're sick. We're tired.
Maybe it's time to get back to basics and eat like our ancestors did?
The ‘eat healthy’ experiment has been a catastrophic failure.
Last weeks’ heat wave in numbers from a cow perspective!

🥛 A daily glass of milk could cut bowel cancer risk by a fifth, according to a major 2025 study by University of Oxford, funded by Cancer Research UK Here's why that matters:
✅ Just 1 glass a day linked to a 20% lower risk of bowel cancer
✅ Calcium in milk plays a key role in gut health
✅ Study adds to growing evidence supporting dairy in a healthy diet
