Hire an assistant. Now it's three layers running at once. Same goal. Three different handoffs. 1/ VAs: Hand off the tasks ↳ Start with inbox, calendar, and data entry ↳ Record a Loom the first time you do it ↳ Give feedback in week one, not month three 2/ AI agents: Hand off the steps ↳ Pick anything repeatable with a clear input ↳ Research, first drafts, reporting, follow-ups ↳ A human still checks the output 3/ Operators: Hand off the outcome ↳ One person owns the business, not a task list ↳ Tie their upside to profit, not hours ↳ You get one or two calls a week. Lazy work used to mean too little output. Now, with AI, it often means too much and more work for everyone else. @tobi call it "slop grenades." A "Slop Grenade" is when you let AI produce the work and pass it on without adding any value (including checking it). Someone else has to wade through it, catch the mistakes, and clean up the mess. You save time and look productive but someone else pays for it.

Attended the first ever Canadian global investment confrence in #Toronto. It was like @ABCSharkTank The premiers of each province were pitching investors their deals. Everyone asked the same question. What is the path to permit? The country is trying to emerge out of an economic coma because foreign investment in new infrastructure ground to a halt over the last decade. I predict two provinces will be the winners of this pitch competition. #Alberta with oil and an abundance of low cost natural gas electrical generation projects and #2 #Saskatchewan with mega #potash and #uranium deals. The rest of the provinces did a poor job articulating the timeline to permit on their projects. You can't invest if it takes decades. #IRR is all about time. Prime Minister @MarkJCarney has his work cut out for him!

Sometimes I think the proliferation of shitty AI billboards is because a lot of inexperienced founders are seeking legitimacy. Much like hiring when you don’t need to and spending too much time and effort on a launch video, you feel more successful and legit if you have a billboard you can point to. I suspect this because afaik it’s not actually a very effective form of advertising.

Shared this in response to a quote tweet questioning why I stopped when I did. Sharing here because I think it’s an important lesson:

Success to me is freedom of time. Going on a family walk at 9 a.m. over going to the coal mines. The coal mines were my reality 12+ years ago. It's taken me over a decade to get to where I am in the sense of "success" and freedom of time. I had to work towards it, which in a certain season meant working away from it (more hours) I'm not sure if there would have been another way but it was my way. What I am certain of that I had done well was not buying the bigger home or more cars. But I still spent money on dumb things in my own way (one would be a bunch of fancy dinners) It was my own path to get to where I am but I am certain that I would have never gotten here if I didn't define what success was to me.

Labeler Agreement Check If two trained people cannot agree, the rubric is the bug, not the model. As a dev, I now measure agreement before I trust a quality score. Agreement Cheatsheet: 1. Double label a slice of cases 2. Compute agreement per rubric item 3. Send fights to a referee 4. Rewrite items with low agreement 5. Retrain labelers on the new wording 6. Do not ship a score built on noise Core principle: A noisy label set will make every model look random. Pro tip: Safety items need higher agreement than tone items.
