Southward bound! Our team in Nisku is preparing to load several mud pumps to support upcoming Horizontal Directional Drilling operations in the United States. It's always exciting to see The Crossing Company's fleet on the move to overcome new trenchless challenges!

While installing 335 m (1100 ft) of HDPE conduit in Rhode Island, The Crossing Company had to work within a limited workspace due to surrounding roadways and infrastructure. Despite this small footprint, our crew was able to arrange the onsite equipment — including a light HDD rig with a mud motor and reclaimer — to accommodate the space while capably drilling through very hard ground conditions. Incredible work from everyone involved!

Did you know that Direct Pipe technology can install pipe diameters ranging from 0.8 - 1.5 m (30 - 60 in)? Our team at The Trenchless Company uses this methodology to install prefabricated pipelines and excavate boreholes in a single pass. However, if the project requires a pipeline with a diameter less than 0.8 m (30 in), Direct Pipe is still often a viable approach. We can first install a larger-diameter “sacrificial pipe” along the borehole path, then install the final pipe during an additional pass!

The first photo was taken ahead of horizontal directional drilling operations in Rhode Island, where our crews were tasked with installing 335 m (1100 ft) of HDPE conduit beneath an exit ramp. The second photo was taken after project completion, showcasing how trenchless technology can capably work within a small footprint while causing minimal disturbances to the installation area!

Here's to another successful intersect! 🤝 Our crews executed this HDD intersect by simultaneously using a 100,000 lb rig and a 220,000 lb rig to pass through the site's gravelly ground conditions. This photo shows the drill bits meeting in the middle upon the completion of both pilot bores.

The Tunneling Company is hard at work in California, where they are using our advanced Hydro Hammer system to install a large-diameter surface casing. Onsite crews will install 42-inch (1.1 m) steel casing to a depth of 200 ft (60 m) ahead of horizontal directional drilling — which will then be completed by their colleagues at The HDD Company. Hydro Hammer technology is designed for large diameter pipe and long drive lengths, making it the ideal solution for this surface casing installation!

Another successful long-distance crossing from The Crossing Company! Reaching a total distance of 1,747 meters, this horizontal directional drilling project utilized gyro steering to precisely navigate a right-of-way corridor with an existing hotline. Our crews overcame this technical challenge — along with an entry angle of 26 degrees — to safety install a 12-inch product line beneath the Beatton River in Northeast B.C.

When encountering challenging ground conditions, our crews need to be versatile to ensure a successful crossing. Here's a brief explanation of how a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) team might work through a site with soft surficial material over a bedrock layer!

The Crossing Company is using a heavy HDD rig to complete a high angle installation near Pink Mountain, B.C. ⛰️ With 440,000 lbs of available push or pull force, this rig is reaming the pilot hole to an 18-inch diameter before installing the pipeline!

The Crossing Company just completed a 1,133 meter drill and pull in Fort McMurray! Our onsite team used a heavy HDD rig with a 12.25 inch drill bit to efficiently install the perforated steel pipe. They then installed a specialized water pump inside of the product pipe, marking the second successful dewatering well completed for this client. Another outstanding accomplishment by everyone involved 👏

You can't beat that view ✨ And no, it isn't photoshopped! One of our team members took this long-exposure photograph in northern Alberta, where we used multiple Light Rigs to install a 24-inch product pipe.

Rig 10 is mobilizing to Fort McMurray for an upcoming horizontal directional drilling project! This heavy HDD rig is capable of 625,000 lbs of push or pull force, making it an ideal choice for longer installation distances. More project details to come!

Our Light Rig Division recently installed a 16-inch line south of Grande Prairie, reaching a distance of approximately 100 meters. The first image shows our light HDD rig on the rig pad, which the client dug deeper into the ground to ensure the tie-in occurred at the correct angle. In the second image, the rig is pulling the product line into place!

The Crossing Company recently completed a 2,955 meter HDD intersect — the longest in company history 🥇 From December 2025 to February 2026, our crews used 625,000 lb and 1,000,000 lb rigs to install a product pipe beneath the Athabasca River. This record-setting project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule, and also included 36-inch casing installations at the entry and exit points. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this incredible accomplishment!
