As often is the case in #elections, a handful of issues likely will dominate debates and campaign ads in the Oregon gubernatorial race. In this Oregon Roundup column, I look at four issues that deserve more attention. oregonroundup.substack.com/p/oregon-issue…
Lessons from #Iran: *There's no way to win with them. Language of a deal barely matters because the Iranians won't live up to it. *The best solution is increase domestic energy product of all types to the point we don't need their oil and can just ignore them.

@adamstatonsmith I didn't say Portland caused it. I said symbolically it matters even though it's only 60 jobs. UA still is well known and Oregon went all-in on the sports apparel industry. Losing jobs in a key industry (particularly a well-known, even if struggling) company matters.
The corporate exodus from Oregon continues. Only 60 or so jobs involved, but symbolically this matters. Under Armour is a leading player in sports apparel, one of the few industries that Oregon is supposed to be a leader in. oregonlive.com/business/2026/…

This is an important article on spending without results. The fact Portland leaders push back on this ranking shows why Portland is lightly regarded as a sports city. Leaders think they are doing A LOT, but they are barely doing the minimum to attract and retain sports franchises. Lack of local wealth offsets all the city's positives.

Posts like this by journalists do more harm to journalistic credibility than any of Trump's rants. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize Mullin. But there's no reason or justification for insulting blue-collar workers in the process.

LOSER: Fiscally Fragile States and Municipalities The math of population decline is straightforward and unforgiving. Fewer young, working people will be supporting more retirees drawing pensions and Social Security. The dependency ratio deteriorates everywhere, but it hits harder in some places than others. States and cities that already carry heavy unfunded pension liabilities, that lean on a narrow base of working-age taxpayers, and that have been losing those taxpayers to migration are staring at a vise. The obligations are fixed and rising, while the tax base funding them is shrinking and aging. The standard responses (raising taxes, cutting services) both make the jurisdiction less attractive, which accelerates the outflow that created the problem. Today’s fiscally questionable states like California and Pennsylvania will struggle, while states already in fiscal trouble (New Jersey, Illinois, Oregon) will face severe fiscal stress. It is the municipal version of the no-floor dynamic playing out in depopulating housing markets: once the spiral starts, there is no obvious price at which it self-corrects. For real estate, fiscal fragility is not an abstraction. It shows up as deteriorating services, rising property and transfer taxes, and eventually distressed infrastructure in exactly the markets that can least afford to deter residents and capital. – The thread running through all of this is the same one running through the fertility data: the future is already determined for a long way out, and most of the market is still underwriting the past. The winners over the next decade won't be the players who guessed where demographics are heading. Thoughts on the #California election. There's no scenario where a R is elected governor or LA mayor, so doesn't really matter if a R makes it to November. At least the weak incumbent mayor faced competition from both parties. In traditional primaries, incumbents often get a pass.
This isn't as bad as companies moving. It's great for the Maleks - entrepreneurs should be rewarded. But it increases the odds the company eventually will be moved by new owners. Oregon needs to create an environment where companies grow & stay in Oregon. oregonlive.com/business/2026/…

I can quibble with some of these grades (especially, post-Trump R) but agree with the overall theme that both parties have failed. The country's best hope is for a 3rd party to emerge to compete with Ds and Rs or replace one of them. #2026elections
