Let’s think about what is actually happening with a colonoscopy. While sedated, a patient undergoes the insertion of a flexible, camera-equipped tube into the colon, granting a physician full access to the lower digestive tract of the patient. The truth about the findings might surprise you. If there is a detected lesion it might take 15 to 20 years to become malignant, or it may never transition into cancer at all. Meanwhile, the immediate risk is severe and can include an inadvertent puncture of the intestinal wall which can cause fecal matter to leak directly into the abdominal cavity, forcing the patient into emergency surgery. When a procedure carries the immediate risk of severe complications, permanent damage, or emergency intervention, we must step back from institutional programming and re-evaluate our approach to preventative medicine. Colonoscopies have never prevented a single death.
This works for most people, but not everyone. If you're wired and tired, your cortisol rhythm can actually be flipped. Morning cortisol is already too low or comes at the wrong time, so waiting 90 minutes might leave you dragging even more. Know your pattern before following the rule.
