Only a guess but this is what I believe will take place in MSM this upcoming week...yes, heat anomalies in the hotter part of the summer are bigger news than cold, but it still balances out pretty well from nature's standpoint. BTW, Winter Storm Warnings, Northern Rockies...

Heat index for Thursday. NWS going 110-120 along/east of I-95 and 105-110 west and I agree. These are life threatening temperatures with heat stroke LIKELY if precautions aren’t taken. Yes, that’s 121 degrees in northeastern AACO….

When you have a combination of operational, ensemble, and artificial intelligence models all suggesting 104-107°F for a high temperature on Thursday…that’s telling ya something. To give you an idea of how rarely temperatures like this are… DC started recording daily highs and lows on January 1st, 1872. That’s 56,425 days between that day and today (June 27th) …only 13 have hit or exceeded 104°F. The city’s *all time* high is 106°F. So it’s certainty impressive to see many different models consistent with such high numbers.

Forecasts coming in "blazing hot" for🎆July 4th weekend in Washington D.C. --> spectacular "heat dome" for USA at 250. National Weather Service now showing 104°F for Thurs/Friday 📈 Humidity will add a "swamp factor" to District. Plan for plenty of hydration breaks!

Have weather forecasts seemed less accurate lately? There's a major contributing factor: nearly half the morning weather balloons in the Lower 48 are "missing." This is an ongoing crisis that is degrading critical severe weather forecasts that we all rely on. It's having real, tangible impacts on degrading forecast quality. If you work in transportation, agriculture or commerce, this should matter to you. Regardless of the causes, this negatively affects people of ALL political backgrounds. Weather affects everyone. And it's impacting ALL of us negatively. We can't look at weather balloon data that doesn't exist. We can't pump nonexistent data into models. We can't rely as heavily on models that don't "know" what's happening above our heads. This is especially concerning for severe weather forecasts. We can't go 18 hours without ascertaining how the atmosphere is layered, how much storm fuel has built up and if severe thunderstorms are going to erupt. The Storm Prediction Center has even acknowledged forecasting frustrations in at least one public bulletin. As an atmospheric scientist myself, I can say firsthand – the forecasts I'm able to offer you are less accurate than they would otherwise be. I'm not able to predict severe weather with the confidence I normally would. That is extremely concerning. The United States is "supposed" to launch balloons at 0Z and 12Z ideally – a.k.a. around 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern time. That's not happening. Many sites, due to staffing issues stemming from broader political and organizational issues, have pushed to 18Z, or early afternoon. That's not helpful for morning severe weather forecasts. In other words, you get less lead time. Less advanced notice. Quicker ramp-ups and ramp-downs to the forecast. We're not able to get jet stream, temperature, moisture or wind profiles of the atmosphere each morning like we otherwise would. Moreover, the World Meteorological Organization encourages 12Z soundings; that data is shared via the Global Observing System (GOS) under the World Weather Watch (WWW). That's not happening.

Models have come into strong agreement on a heat wave in the DC area mid to late next week that will be unusually intense and dangerous. Many spots could reach or surpass 100 degrees on multiple days, especially Thursday and Friday, which could flirt with the all-time record of 106. The Boise, Idaho area was hit with one of the worst summer storms ever recorded yesterday evening. Some areas had more than 8 inches of hail in less than an hour.

Next week the Eastern US will endure a large and dangerous #heatwave. NOAA forecasting 53 Million people to be impacted by extreme heat on Wednesday alone, with heat index values up to 115° in purple! The heatwave will last the entire week from Monday into the following weekend!

🌱 LAWN HEALTH INDEX UPDATE 🌵 💦 The recent rain is finally showing up where it matters most… on the drought map. 👍🏻 This week’s Drought Monitor shows improvement across Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore, where some areas were downgraded from Extreme Drought to Severe Drought following recent soaking rainfall. 📈 Lawn Health Index: 52/100 🟡 Status: FAIR While BWI has recorded 2.13” of rain this month, that number doesn’t tell the whole story. Many communities across Maryland picked up 2 to over 4 inches of rain this week, providing much-needed relief to drought-stressed lawns and landscapes. 🌧️ Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected Friday and Saturday, which should help maintain soil moisture before the next heat wave arrives. ⭐️ The drought is far from over. Severe Drought remains across much of Central Maryland, and areas of Extreme Drought still persist on portions of Delmarva and farther south. Ridge rider ring of fire pattern looking likely at the end of June into early July. This is by far one of the most interesting weather patterns we get during the Summer. Clusters of severe storms can ride down the side of the ridge. They can travel VERY long distances at times. We will watch to see how this unfolds in the coming days.

We have seen some beneficial rain this week! Many zones south of Baltimore were about to pick up close to an inch, with a few localized spots getting over 2". With that said, this is not nearly enough to get us out of the drought we are in. Areas southeast of DC still need about a foot of rain to erase the year-to-date deficit. However, it's a start! Getting widespread rain chances is a hard thing for us to do in the summer, given that our patterns are more conducive to scattered storm chances. We either need the Jet Stream to push through a large-scale system or for a tropical system to impact the area. Next rain chances arrive Friday and Saturday with scattered showers and storms. Updated 7-day forecast coming this evening.

Immense storm damage in Fairfax County, Va just south of George Mason University. Fire officials on scene tell me, as far as they know, everyone here in the Chatham Towne community is uninjured. Power remains out.

Major tree damage from storms reported in Burke. NWS says probably straight line winds, not a tornado. Many trees, wires were toppled. Even some damage to siding/shingles. Here's some more info and pics: capitalweather.com/major-tree-dam… Were there storms bad for you? Thanks for any reports.
