How did city dwellers in the US Northeast handle extreme heat waves like July 1911 prior to air conditioning? Kids would lick blocks of ice. Folks would sleep in the shade at the Battery or in Central Park. Their homes were ovens and young + old risked heat stroke or worse.. History: history.com/articles/heat-…

Amazing how "modernity" has not really kept up with today (2026) with minimal indoor home cooling in London and Paris compared to 100-150 years ago when everyone would brave a swim in the disgusting waters of the Thames or Seine. Imagine our ancestors learning that we have amazing A.C. but would rather suffer, or drown in a lake to cool off. Now, the climate is 1°C hotter & urban heat island much worse. Very little adaptation even with such wealthy and prosperity. Instead, electricity to run air conditioners is a "luxury item" in Europe.

As Harper’s magazine observed, big cities, like Paris, London, and New York, were “pretty bad places in midsummer. Fascinating newly published history paper on public swimming pools and bathing in the rivers of London, New York City, and Paris at the turn of the 20th Century with mention of brutal 1911 Paris heat wave. Disgusting! "One commentator used the oxymoron “fetid freshness” to describe the feeling of Seine water, encapsulating the complex experience of bathing in the river during this period. I think it's partly turn-key service e.g. you order a batch of data, and it just arrives (pushed) every day at the same time. You don't need to deal with NOMADS or broken links. Their 24/7 Service Desk is worth the fee, which is now 1/4 of what it was 10-years ago. Also, the access to the Archive + Hindcasts = very valuable.

Meteorologists can easily diagnose the synoptic pattern --> omega block --> ridge or "heat dome" This extreme heat wave event is predictable a week (or more) in advance. Is this particular atmospheric circulation pattern rare in its evolution or origin? Not really.
