Ahead of the Horn of Africa Trade Ministers’ Meeting, I met with my Kenyan counterpart, Hon. Lee Kinyanjui, Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry. We took stock of where Somalia–Kenya trade stands and agreed to work toward a formal bilateral trade framework — removing barriers and making trade simpler and more predictable for businesses on both sides.

1/2. Somalia will lead the inaugural Trade Ministers’ Meeting of the Horn of Africa Initiative (HoAI) in Addis Ababa on 3 Sept 2026, with H.E. @AmbGamal chairing the meeting & leading discussions on advancing regional trade facilitation, economic integration & trade cooperation.

DG Dr. @GuledAbdijalil chaired the first Steering Committee meeting for Somalia’s Livestock Master Plan. Developed with sector partners, the plan will map investments and reforms to improve animal health, productivity, strengthen livestock markets & build a more resilient sector.

Today, DG Dr. @GuledAbdijalil and @MoH_Somalia officials launched Somalia’s Pandemic Fund program with partners. Having helped shape it at the health ministry, he now leads its livestock work to build stronger surveillance, labs & joint response across human and animal health.

Today in Galkacyo, @MoLFR_SO handed solar-powered milk fridges and food-grade storage containers to 60 women milk traders, with training on use and care. They are the first of 1,000 women traders to be reached across five states, helping cut spoilage and protect daily income.

Pleased to welcome the @EALA_Parliament Committee on Communication, Trade and Investment to Mogadishu this week. We benefited greatly from their experience on EAC integration and trade facilitation as we launched Somalia’s first National Trade Facilitation Committee (NTFC), together with the @SomaliPM and @MOFASomalia. The NTFC will help make trading easier, deepen Somalia’s integration into the region, and open more opportunities for Somali businesses.
