China Is Practising Against a US Warship In the Desert Satellite imagery reportedly shows a full-scale mock-up of a US Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer at China’s Ruoqiang Test Range in Xinjiang, apparently mounted on a rail system to simulate a moving naval target. The choice is strategically significant. The Arleigh Burke class is the backbone of US surface warfare, with: ▪️ Length: around 155 metres ▪️ Speed: more than 30 knots ▪️ Displacement: up to approximately 9,700 tons ▪️ Missile capacity: up to 96 MK-41 vertical-launch cells ▪️ Systems: Aegis combat system, air defence, ballistic-missile defence, anti-submarine and long-range strike capabilities China may be using such targets to improve the accuracy of anti-ship weapons, including the DF-21D, with an estimated range of around 1,500 kilometres, and the DF-26, which can reach approximately 4,000 kilometres. However, destroying a moving warship requires more than missile range. Ladakh Unlocks India’s Next Energy Revolution ONGC has successfully completed drilling its second geothermal well in Ladakh’s Puga Valley, marking an important step towards developing India’s first geothermal power project. Located at an altitude of nearly 14,000 feet, the well was drilled to a depth of around 1,000 metres. The operation was reportedly completed in about a month, with greater efficiency and lower costs than the earlier exploratory well. IMEC: The Missing Links That Could Reshape Eurasian Trade The 6,400-km India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor could connect Indian ports with Europe through the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel but critical gaps remain. The UAE has completed a 900-km railway network from Fujairah to Al-Ghuwaifat. The proposed 269-km Al-Ghuwaifat–Haradh link into Saudi Arabia may require nearly $2 billion. Connecting Saudi Arabia to Israel’s Jezreel Valley railway through Jordan could require another $2.1–2.5 billion, while Haifa would serve as the Mediterranean gateway to European ports. Overall, approximately $5 billion is needed to make the Gulf–Haifa rail corridor minimally operational. India–Japan’s Rare-Earth Moment India possesses nearly 8.52 million tonnes of identified rare-earth oxides, including 7.23 million tonnes in monazite deposits and another 1.29 million tonnes in hard-rock formations across Rajasthan and Gujarat. Yet its annual production remains below 1% of global output revealing that the real challenge is not availability, but capability. China’s dominance is built across the entire value chain: mining, separation, refining and permanent-magnet manufacturing. This gives Beijing strategic leverage over industries ranging from electric vehicles and semiconductors to missiles, radars and advanced defence systems. An India–Japan rare-earth partnership could help change this equation. India brings resources, industrial scale and manufacturing potential; Japan offers advanced processing technology, precision engineering, financing and supply-chain expertise. India’s ₹7,280-crore initiative to establish 6,000 tonnes of annual rare-earth permanent-magnet capacity is an important beginning. Russia–China Military Cooperation Has Crossed a New Threshold Reuters reports that nearly 200 Russian military personnel received covert training at PLA facilities in 2025. The programme reportedly covered drone warfare, electronic warfare, army aviation, armoured operations and radiological, biological and chemical protection. At least four Russian and Chinese generals were directly involved, while some trainees allegedly later served in Ukraine. Beijing denies the allegations, and Moscow has dismissed the reporting. Why this matters for India The emerging equation is powerful: China’s technology and industrial capacity + Russia’s battlefield experience from Ukraine. For the PLA, this could accelerate learning in drone swarms, counter-drone systems, electronic warfare and combined-arms operations capabilities directly relevant to any future confrontation along the LAC. India also retains significant exposure to Russian defence systems. Russia supplied 40% of India’s major arms imports during 2021–25, although this declined from 70% in 2011–15. India remained the world’s second-largest arms importer, while China supplied 80% of Pakistan’s arms imports during 2021–25. This creates a complex strategic triangle: India depends partly on Russian platforms, while Russia deepens military cooperation with China, and China remains Pakistan’s principal arms supplier. India’s response must be pragmatic: Preserve the Russia relationship but accelerate indigenisation, diversify critical technologies and prepare specifically for Chinese drone and electronic warfare.
