The shape is always the same. - He is rich, therefore the £144 does not count. - He bought it for a tax break, therefore the tax break does not matter. - He is not a real farmer, therefore the crop did not drown. - Amazon pays for it, therefore the losses are staged. - He wrote a column about Meghan Markle, therefore the TB never happened. - He drives a Range Rover, therefore the fertiliser tax is not coming in January. - He has a film crew, therefore the council did not refuse the car park. - He presented Top Gear, therefore an imported sausage does not cost 18p. - He sells candles, therefore a third of British farms did not lose money in 2024. Every one of those is an argument about a man. Not one is an argument about a figure. And it keeps happening because the figures are unarguable. They come from planning files, Defra statistics, a government-commissioned review and the farm's own accounts read out loud on camera. There is nothing there to dispute, so the only move left is to dislike the messenger loudly enough that nobody checks the message. It has not worked, and here is how we know. Waitrose sold 193 percent more British thick-cut sirloin after series four. Acceptances onto agricultural degrees rose 8 percent in 2024 and are up around a fifth since 2019. Farm shops have queues down country lanes. Thirteen thousand people stood in Westminster over a tax on farmland, and the government eventually handed back £130 million a year. An Environment Secretary told the Commons he was changing planning law over the frustrations of a certain very famous farmer in Oxfordshire, and in May 2024 he did it. None of that happened because the public decided they liked Jeremy Clarkson. Most of them made their minds up on him twenty years ago, one way or the other. It happened because they finally understood what a farm earns, and they did not need to admire the man holding the accounts to read them. They are still debating whether the witness is credible. The country stopped listening to the cross-examination and went and bought the beef.

So many people are saying the same thing. The decay across Britain (especially since the Covid era) is noticeable almost everywhere. Weeds growing on pavements. Filthy streets and signposts. Potholes strewn everywhere. Overflowing rubbish bins. Dirty buildings. Blocked road drains. Boarded up shops. What exactly are we paying our council tax for? We are paying more and getting less. Local councils are failing to deliver on the basics. It’s absolutely disgraceful. Britain is being left to rot.

I will only buy outdoor reared pork on both animal welfare and quality grounds. You really can taste the difference but yes the cost is twice the price. If we rightly ban certain practices on animal welfare grounds then we should not allow the import of meat from animals who have been reared in substandard conditions. If a practice is too cruel for this country then we should not be importing the very same cruelty and worse undercutting our own farmers whose cost is higher because of good practice.

@SamaHoole I only buy English meat for my husband. Im only one person but just imagine if every person grew a conscience. The cruelty on farms abroad would stay abroad and maybe even change if we stopped encouraging it. It can be done.

Jeremy Clarkson lets slip a number on Clarkson's Farm that explains almost everything wrong with British food. A sausage from his own pigs costs 74p. The identical sausage made from imported pig meat costs 18p. Most people hear that and assume the foreign farmer is simply better at it. Britain outlawed the sow stall in 1999, alone in Europe bar Sweden, because the public here decided a pregnant animal ought to be able to turn around. The national pig herd then fell by roughly half. British people did not eat half as much bacon. Work out where the difference went. Twenty-seven years on, the National Pig Association reckons around 95 percent of the countries selling pork into Britain still permit the stall. Most of the EU allows four weeks of every cycle. Much of America allows the full sixteen-week gestation. Brazil allows it outright. The sow was never spared. She was moved abroad, into a shed with looser rules and no British inspector, and the farm that would have kept her shut its gate. Now watch the same thing happen to beef and lamb, on a far bigger scale. British beef is grass. Native cattle standing out in the rain on ground that grows nothing else, doing what they have done on those hills since before the language was written down. What the NFU says we are being asked to compete against is a feedlot finishing up to 50,000 head on one site, which it called unacceptable here on both moral and environmental grounds. The deals were signed anyway. Australian and New Zealand beef rises to a quota of 110,000 tonnes by 2033, and after that there is no tariff at all. Lamb runs to 60,000 tonnes this year and climbs from there, and we already import between a quarter and a third of what we eat. Every one of those deals was announced with a firm assurance that food standards would not fall. That assurance is true, and it is beside the point. The standards enforced at our border cover what is in the meat. Hormones stay banned, and rightly. What crosses untouched is how the animal lived. There is no border check for a feedlot, no tariff on a gestation crate, no form anywhere asking whether the thing we made illegal here was used to make the thing arriving here. So a minister can say food standards are protected and back British farming in the same breath, and be telling the truth twice, while signing the document that finishes the job. The pattern runs through the lot. Barren cages banned here in 2012, egg products still arriving from countries that use them. Force-feeding outlawed in 2007, foie gras on sale every Christmas. And the campaigners who won those bans never once came back to see what happened next, because the victory was legislative and the consequence was six thousand miles away. Nobody counts sows in Iowa. Nobody films a feedlot in Queensland. Clarkson absorbs that 56p on every plate that leaves his kitchen, on television, which is the only reason anybody can see the number at all. Inside a supermarket price it has been invisible for a quarter of a century. Fifty-six pence is what this country charges a man for obeying it. He is not competing with foreign farmers. He is competing with his own ban, on a shelf, standing next to the version of himself he was forbidden from being.

This won’t end well. Kids with undeveloped brains will be used as guinea pigs thanks to the adults who lost their fucking mind!!!

Dear HM Government, (UK) Firstly, congratulations. You’ve managed to discover a brand-new definition of transparency. Apparently, the people who write the laws can have their criminal records kept secret from the very people expected to obey those laws. That’s an impressive piece of political gymnastics. The rest of us apply for jobs, volunteer roles, taxi licences, security passes, and all manner of positions where background checks are considered perfectly reasonable. Yet when it comes to those entrusted with running the country… suddenly privacy becomes the highest constitutional principle. Forgive us if we’re a little confused. If a criminal record is irrelevant to holding public office, then explain why. If it is relevant, then surely voters deserve to know before they hand over power at the ballot box. Democracy relies on informed consent. It’s difficult to make an informed choice if important information about elected representatives is deliberately withheld. This isn’t about conducting witch hunts or judging people for minor mistakes made decades ago. It’s about accountability. Those who expect the public’s trust should be prepared to earn it through openness, not secrecy. Unlike the government’s pursuit of Veterans 🤔 So, a simple question: Why should MPs and ministers be held to a lower standard of transparency than many ordinary citizens applying for everyday jobs? After all, “nothing to hide” seems to apply enthusiastically to taxpayers, but rather less enthusiastically to taxpayers’ employees. Is transparency now something that’s only expected of the governed, while the governors are exempt? Abit like the COVID vaccine 🤔 there is a pattern, Perhaps we’ve misunderstood how equality works. We foolishly assumed the same standards applied to everyone. It would appear they do… right up until someone becomes an MP. The British public doesn’t expect perfection.
