The law says MPs and their families should receive a health insurance package covering all SAARC and ASEAN countries. But MPs keep telling themselves, “Well, the law doesn’t say the coverage must be limited to SAARC and ASEAN,” and use that loophole to keep adding more countries. What makes this especially shameful is that they added destinations like the UAE, Türkiye and Oman to their own healthcare coverage while ordinary Maldivians were on social media begging, waiting and pleading for access to even basic medicines. This has gone far enough. Public money should put the basic healthcare needs of the public first, not continuously expand privileges for politicians. Let’s stop this madness. Everything feels unheard of, unfamiliar or even useless until, one day, it becomes the norm. I remember when we first created a Viber community for Hiya flat applicants in 2019. At the time, it was a very new concept. Many people criticized it, and many simply didn’t believe it would work. First 6 months we had less than 100 members, after almost two years 10,000. And look at what happened afterwards. HDC and the Ministry eventually started creating official Viber communities themselves. Today, having a community group for housing or land applicants or a lobby group is seen almost as a necessity. What once seemed unusual became normal. Save this: The same will happen with Majlis e-petitions. Right now, they may feel new. Some may think they won’t achieve anything. The portal itself has flaws and there is plenty of room for improvement. But in the coming months and years, Majlis e-petitions will become a normal part of public participation and potentially one of the most important tools ordinary people have to collectively make their voices heard. Change always has a beginning. But who do you want to be? Will you be among those who lead the change or those who join only after the change has already happened.
