Earlier this week, I shared my most memorable ACC tournament moment. Today, I'll share my most poignant memory, one that I think better defines what the league's signature event has meant to families in North Carolina much more than the now-trite "My teacher used to roll a TV cart into our classroom." In the spring of 1987, my first senior year @NCState, I was the outgoing editor of @TechSports, covering my second @ACCmbb tournament. This one was in Landover, Maryland. I got to the Capital Centre early to watch all four games. In between the two sessions, I looked up to see my name being flashed on the scoreboard, with the message "Call home." This was long before cell phones, or pagers, or even accessible landline numbers inside the press room. I knew it took some effort to get that message on the Jumbotron. As I suspected, the news was not good. My maternal grandfather, Harse Gales, had died while cutting limbs with a chainsaw on his farm in Cleveland County. I was expected home for the funeral that Sunday afternoon. I only saw in passing what was perhaps the greatest semifinal day in tournament history, when both games were decided in double overtime. @PackMensBball beat Wake Forest 77-73 and North Carolina beat Virginia 84-82. It set up a classic title game between the unranked and sixth-seeded Wolfpack and No. 2 UNC, who hadn't lost in 16 games against ACC opponents. Regardless, early Sunday morning I was on a plane, headed to Charlotte and on to Lincolnton for the funeral, which started at the same time as the championship game's tipoff. My dad assured me he had set the VCR and would get the whole game for me on video tape. The funeral ended at about halftime and we all got in various cars for the 20-minute, headlights-on procession to the cemetery. I rode with my brother-in-law because, guiltily, I knew we could listen to the second half of the game on his stereo. I felt awful for two reasons: First, I was missing the first State-Carolina championship game in a dozen years; as a new reporter I knew it wouldn't happen often. Worse, I was trying to keep up with a silly basketball game as we were about to bury my mother's father, who I had just visited four days earlier. It was just wrong. We pulled into the cemetery just as @VinnyDHoops made two free throws to give State a 68-67 lead. We lingered in the car to hear how Kelsey Weems prevented All-America guard Kenny Smith from getting the ball and how both Joe Wolf and Ranzino Smith missed game-winning shots. While the campus in Raleigh went wild, my brother-in-law and I gathered ourselves, put on our most serious faces and joined the family in the receiving line. My mom got out of the car she rode in, seated between my dad and her mother, with her daddy in a casket in back. NC State has consistently gotten their ass kicked in the trenches on both sides of the ball. The penalties don’t do us any favors but this is a thorough butt kicking.
