The historical backdrop to this biological surge is the Green Revolution. Since 1950, world population expanded from 2.5 billion to over 8 billion, while famine mortality dropped sharply. Synthetic fertilisers, high-yield crop genetics, advanced irrigation and elevated CO₂ fertilisation worked in tandem to avert predicted global crop failures. CO₂ provides the essential carbon backbone for photosynthesis, converting sunlight into plant biomass and oxygen, thereby supporting the foundation of every food chain on Earth. Commercial greenhouse operators have long understood this fundamental biology, routinely enriching ambient air to 1,000–1,500 ppm CO₂ to accelerate crop yields by 20–70%. Outside the greenhouse, modest atmospheric warming and elevated CO₂ extend growing seasons and expand arable land in higher latitudes, optimising conditions for agricultural productivity and carbon drawdown. Why, then, is a gas essential to plant life framed as a global crisis? The answer lies less in atmospheric physics and more in the financial and administrative architecture built around carbon regulation. Elevating carbon reduction into a central economic plan has shifted priority away from real-world environmental management and into ultimate administrative control. This counteracts the very processes that keep the planet green, while eroding the foundations of democratic governance.
