On one of his many visits to @TheJimmyFund clinic, Tim Wakefield was told there was a boy who was a big Red Sox fan and would be so disappointed to miss him. The kid was in the infusion room, Wake was told. It was chemo day. Three hours later the boy returned to his home, sick and sad and just feeling lousy. That changed quickly. Sitting in the room, waiting quietly for the kid was No. 49, in his Sox jersey. He wasn’t the greatest Sox player ever but I’ll bet if you took a poll of the kids and the parents at the Jimmy Fund over the last 25 years Wake would be their favorite. What’s the opposite of karma? Well, it just got Tim Wakefield. So damn cruel.
