It was late yesterday when I realized it was World Photography Day. Going through 2026 images made me realize how much of my work is truly grounded in Earth & how powerful that connection is in making daily choices. If there were only a way to connect every human to life outside the “boxes” we live, work, & commute in.

Good Morning Everyone! On a grateful note, here's some love from Theodore Roosevelt National Park on July 4th, 2026. That lovely silhouette in the sun is that handsome son of Red Face, Tibbs, along with one of his harem mates (not sure which one). The ooo's and ahhh's emanating from inside Ruby Raptor when we came upon this scene was priceless, and it wasn't long before more park visitors appreciated that same view, the peace portrayed by the wild ones. Regarding Dani, our quarter horse mare, I just cannot express enough how grateful I am for your love and support and how each of you understand the deep love and connection between a human and their four legged friends, and those difficult tasks we are faced with when we have committed to caring for them for their lifetimes. It has blown me away and reaffirmed my faith that 99% of us are truly here for them, and not for our own self serving needs. Let's not let that 1% destroy anymore lives. Each of us can educate on the commitment needed to taking on a friendship with a horse, and how important family is to the equid, both wild and domestic. No horse should be faced with a 'kill' pen. Ever. If we want to save our horses, we keep them. If we can't keep them, there are other options and believe me as I age, I think about that every day. What happens if I can't care for them anymore? Either physically or monetarily? What is my exit plan? To each of you thank you and be grateful for those four legged ones who bring our lives so much purpose! Good Morning! 4 more days before heading west to celebrate our 250th birthday in that incredible landscape of Theodore Roosevelt National Park! The last few weeks — I can totally relate to this guy! 🤣

Well...today was crushing. Not at all what Dr. Mary was anticipating this morning as we worked on Dani's front left foot hunting for that pesky abscess. Or so we thought. So we decided to xray her hoof. What are the worst words one can hear about our dearest friend the horse? Dani, registered as Freckles Minuet, was born on May 5th, 2003, in Keldron, SD. Her momma is Annie (Tari Anna), who has been my companion and friend for over 30 years. Dani's sire is Freckles Gentlemen (a full brother to Freckles Playboy) his semen traveling all the way from Kay Floyd's in Texas the year before. I will always remember May 5th, 2003,...sitting at the Lopez Ranch in Keldron, SD watching Annie walk across the pasture and witnessed her have a contraction. Seriously, it made her belly contract so hard I thought she was going to break. Shortly after this little shipped semen filly arrived, who we ended up calling Dani. Her 23 years have provided a daughter, Olive (now 18) and in her stoic red mare way has impacted life here, human and horse alike, as I can hear Olive whinnying for her, as I type this. So hearing those dreadful words today, after taking several xrays from all angles, was crushing...and her entire life flashed before us as Dr. Mary confirmed, her pastern is broken. How does an 1100 pound horse, primarily sedentary, with an arthritic left knee that limits her mobility break a pastern? We will never know. We can speculate to the end of tomorrow, but we will never know. We discussed all the options for her and they would put her through tremendous anxiety with little success. We have her comfortable, providing pain support, and she will be with her family until I can process all that happened today and make that dreaded decision to say goodbye. So that loss I mentioned in last night’s post—it started on July 6th, when my studio kitty, Lola, changed worlds the night we got home from celebrating the 250th in TRNP. Lola was very ill before I left, and I was providing supportive care and Michael faithfully cared for her while I was away. I am grateful she waited for me to come home, so I could say a final goodbye. No amount of vet care could save her either. Then there’s the horrendous loss that decimated dear friends on July 24th, the tragic loss of a grandson just starting his life. I have nothing else for you tonight, no wise words, no wisdom, nothing…just a huge broken hole crying for all the loss everyone experiences and the loss my equid family will experience next week. They will. Their world will shift, change, and never be the same, just like ours is when we lose life that is precious to us. Hug your animal friends…they deserve it. Hug your loved ones…they deserve it too.

@cicero_mn Thank you…grateful for the support. The hardest part — Dani is healthy, opinionated and vibrant and one stupid little bone is going to take her life and I have to make that choice. Sharing our lives with animal friends is not for the faint of heart.
