Casting doesn't evaluate accents technically. They evaluate performances. But an accent that isn't solid puts a ceiling on the performance. Every time. The actor managing the accent has less room for the acting. That's the tradeoff.

Actors have taught themselves tens of thousands of skills. Walking. Typing. Driving. Eating with a spoon. Accents are no different. Physical skills. They just take time and targeted practice with a good coach. Nothing magical about it. Nothing mysterious.

The first thing I build with every actor isn't a sound. It's a person. What was their backyard like? What sounds did they fall asleep to? What did summer smell like? Skip this and the accent sits on the surface. Do this and the accent has somewhere to live.
Imagine this: a production budgets three days of ADR because they already know the accent work isn't going to hold. That's not a contingency plan. That's an expectation of failure baked into the schedule. Prep time prevents this. Every time.

Before a single sound is made, the accent needs a person to attach to. Not the character breakdown. The human being. What was the view from the bedroom window? What did the kitchen sound like at dinner? Skip the identity work and you end up with something that sounds learned.

"I need to lose my accent." I hear this constantly. Here's something that might sound strange from a dialect coach: nobody wants you to lose it.
IPA is genuinely useful for actors. But the way it's typically taught gets the whole thing backwards.
