The majestic Abu Simbel Temple from the plane, Aswan Egypt 🇪🇬 The temples of Abu Simbel were commissioned by Ramesses II in the 13th Century BC, to celebrate his reign and project Egyptian power deep into Nubia. The larger temple features four colossal seated statues of Ramesses II, each standing about 66ft (20m) tall. The complex was carved directly into a sandstone cliff overlooking the Nile and remained buried by desert sands for centuries until its rediscovery by European explorers in 1813. In 1960s, construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge Abu Simbel beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser. In one of the largest archaeological rescue operations ever undertaken, UNESCO coordinated the dismantling of the temples into more than 1000 blocks and relocated them about 210ft (65m) higher and 660ft (200m) inland between 1964-1968. The relocation cost roughly $40 million at the time and involved experts from over 50 countries, becoming a landmark achievement in international heritage preservation. Twice each year, sunlight penetrates deep into the Great Temple and illuminates three of its inner statues, a phenomenon deliberately engineered over 3,200 years ago. #archaeohistories
