NFL Summer, 52 Years Ago John Facenda recounts the sights and sounds of training camp in 1974.
Exactly 30 years ago today, this legend of gaming history hit the shelves. On July 23, 1996, Grand Prix 2 was published by MicroProse. It was developed single-handedly by legendary game designer Geoff Crammond, who also created other classics such as The Sentinel and Stunt Car Racer. Happy 30th birthday, Grand Prix 2!
As the Red Sox go for history tonight now is a time to feature my favorite intro in the history of the franchise
Finally my unique take on emulation frontends is here ;) The box covers and cartridge labels are not hand selected! I currently have a database of almost every game (incl. different regions) for 20+ consoles. From GameBoy to Switch! What do you think? This will ship with Sly!
1984 short film Orpheus and Eurydice by animator Lesley Keen🏺 The entire film is masterfully animated in the exact style of ancient Greek red-figure and black-figure pottery. Without a single word of dialogue, characters glide across the screen like a rotating classical vase.
I choose pixel-style graphics over hyper-realistic graphics any day of the week. The Chrono Trigger intro is a perfect example of pixel art at its very finest, and why that style hits so much harder than games with lifelike graphics. Never let it die, please.
I own and run VGMaps.com: The Video Game Atlas mostly by myself for over 24 years, and it's amassed over 50,000 maps for over 3500 video games across almost 60 different platforms. Yet, I always feel like many gamers don't even know what it is. Do you use VGMaps?
🥬CDC’s BioSense surveillance program promises to detect outbreaks fast—it’s why they collect your health data in near real-time. It FAILED. 1st parasitic lettuce cases were in May. It’s July 16. Wonder what the hell BioSense is…? pre-order BIOLOGICAL WAR: A SCENARIO.
BREAKING: CDC investigators officially identify Taylor Farms lettuce supplied to Taco Bell as a suspected source of the cyclosporiasis outbreak sickening thousands.
Mega Man (Capcom, 1987) was anything but a typical platformer. It introduced several novel features that defined the genre and the franchise. What made it groundbreaking in 1987 were two key innovations: Nonlinear stage selection: Unlike most contemporaries (Super Mario Bros. with its linear progression), players could choose the order of the six Robot Master stages. This added strategy, as each boss’s weakness was part of a rock-paper-scissors system tied to the boss weapons; defeating a boss allowed you to take the weapon that exploited another’s weakness. Weapon absorption mechanic: Defeating a Robot Master allowed Mega Man to copy and use their special weapon (with limited ammo). This was highly innovative for the era and became trademark feature of the series. Mega Man became one of the longest-lasting franchises ever, still going strong today, with Mega Man: Dual Override planned for release in 2027.
Bitmap Brothers always had that rare skill of coming up with cool and unique game ideas, and made them look epic as hell. Their style is instantly recognizable. Cadaver, an isometric action-adventure from 1990, is such a game. It had a crapload of traps, puzzles, secret rooms, and creatures trying to kill you - while you were seeking the evil necromancer Dianos in the deepest level. A highly fascinating (and really tough!) game for its time. You can push, pull, manipulate and use objects to gain access to new rooms or secret passages. You find keys, potions, spells and other useful items to go deeper and deeper into Castle Wulf. Cadaver is really difficult, but one of its strength is the non-linear gameplay: puzzles don't have to be solved in a predefined way, objects can be used in different locations/situations. If you are a patient player, then this game is for you. For the casual player it's probably a bit too much and too tough. Bitmap Brothers always had that rare skill of coming up with cool and unique game ideas, and made them look epic as hell. Their style is instantly recognizable.
Midwinter (1989) by Mike Singleton - who also gave us The Lords of Midnight - is a massive game in every sense of the word. For its time, it was incredibly ambitious, combining first-person action, strategy, and RPG elements into a pretty unique package. It was definitely not a "load up and play" game - the learning curve was extremely steep (it took me ages to figure it out). In the story, a meteorite impact has triggered a new ice age, leaving a vast 160,000-square-mile frozen island. You begin as Captain John Stark, a police officer tasked with building a guerrilla resistance against the invading forces of General Masters. You can recruit up to 32 unique characters, each with their own personality, skills (such as marksmanship or mechanics), backstories, and relationships. The game also features a detailed body-part injury system, along with hunger and exhaustion mechanics. And remember, if you think that's sounds a bit "meh, so?", this was released in 1989! ItMidwinter was praised at the time for its gigantic open world, vector-based 3D graphics, and mix of genres. Many consider it one of the first true open-world games, and being quite ahead of its time.
Tron turns 44 today — released on July 9, 1982. The craziest part? This groundbreaking “computer movie” was snubbed by the Academy for Best Visual Effects. Why? They ruled that using CGI was basically cheating and gave filmmakers an unfair advantage over traditional practical effects and hand animation. That “cheating” technique is now the foundation of every major blockbuster for the past 20+ years. Well done, Tron. The future you predicted won. ⚡ Bonus wild fact: The official Tron arcade game (released by Bally Midway right after the film) actually out-grossed the movie. While the film made about $33–50 million worldwide at the box office, the arcade cabinets sold around 10,000 units and raked in an estimated $100–200 million in quarters during its peak years. It even won Coin-Operated Game of the Year. What amazes me most is that there was never a proper Commodore 64 adaptation. Almost every other big 80s sci-fi movie got turned into a C64 game… but the one literally set inside a computer world with light cycle races? Nope. (There was a late, unrelated Tron-like game in 1989, but nothing official at the time.) Mind-blowing.
EA wasn't always the "evil giant" that it had turned into later on. They had a pretty good run in the 80s and 90s. NHL '94, released by EA Sports in 1993 for Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), SNES, and later other platforms, is a great example and landmark ice hockey game. It featured all official NHL teams and players thanks to full licensing from the NHL, rosters based on the 1993-94 season, manual goalie control, authentic (for its time) gameplay, and - of course - great fights. It captured hockey's speed and physicality better than anything prior. Many consider it one of the greatest sports games ever for its balance of realism and arcade style. It definitely set the standard for the entire genre in the 16-bit era. Maybe EA just got too big for their own good but they were certainly a big reason why 80s and 90s gaming is so memorable.
Signs of a wealthy childhood: 1) your parents had time and contagious, optimistic energy for real conversations, bedtime stories, patient and thoughtful listening 2) you were given enough freedom to explore who you could be without feeling judged 3) you were given access to plenty of novels and books, and had time to read them slowly, and deeply think about them 4) you grew up in an environment where good taste and high standards were naturally acquired because your parents were honest about their feelings 5) you were taught the importance of enjoying what you do, and how that's the only way to compound the greatest benefits in life 6) you had the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures and societies, you saw the best and the worst of people, you eventually made up your own value system from independent thinking 7) you were encouraged to learn the hard things, challenge yourself, try again if you failed, and not just give up every time things got a bit painful 8) you never had to fake smiles or pretend to be who you are not just to satisfy the ego of insecure adults 9) your parents loved each other, and you learned what a happy marriage and healthy relationship looks like and feels like 10) you learned that every good thing in life comes with a price, and that "bad luck" simply means that you have underestimated the price to pay to become the kind of person who deserved the good luck
IN A 1997 KEYNOTE A DEVELOPER TOLD A ROOM FULL OF PROGRAMMERS THAT THE COMPUTER REVOLUTION HAD NOT ACTUALLY HAPPENED YET. THEN HE PLAYED A CLIP OF WINDOWS, ICONS AND LIVE EDITING RUNNING ON A MACHINE FROM 1973 AND THE ROOM WENT QUIET. 62 minutes from Alan Kay -- the man who invented the word "object-oriented" and helped build the first modern personal computer at Xerox PARC. -> The idea that lands: almost everything you call "computing" is just paper, digitized. Documents, mail, folders. We took the most powerful medium ever made and used it to imitate the office. The real machine -- the one that thinks with you, that you shape live instead of typing at -- was sketched in the 60s and 70s, then quietly abandoned. He calls modern software an Egyptian pyramid: millions of bricks stacked by brute force, no structure underneath. And now AI is quietly hauling us back toward what he wanted -- you describe intent, the machine builds the how. Not a revolution from nowhere. A return to a dream we walked away from. You thought this was the future. This is the talk that shows you it is a detour we have been on for 40 years. Save this. It reframes the whole industry ↓
A DEVELOPER WALKED ON STAGE DRESSED AS A 1973 ENGINEER AND "PREDICTED" THE FUTURE OF PROGRAMMING. THE TWIST: EVERYTHING HE DESCRIBED WAS ALREADY INVENTED 40 YEARS EARLIER AND WE STILL REFUSE TO USE IT. 32 minutes from Bret Victor, doing the most quietly savage talk on our entire
Remember when games weren't just a "click and download" thing but came in a physical box with disks, manuals, posters and sometimes incredibly beautiful maps? They gave you the first glimpse of the world that awaits, without revealing too many details or spoiling the secrets still waiting to be discovered by you, the player. You could see it, trace it in your mind, imagine diving in, exploring, and reaching the furthest corners. What would await you there? Riches, fame, and glory? Death? A legendary sword? Ultima: The Britannia Map Wizardry VII: The Lost Guardia Map Bard's Tale III: The Skara Brae Map Might and Magic IV: The Xeen Map When you played those games, the map would be right there, next to your keyboard... or even better, pinned to your wall. I am pretty sure all of you who experienced that kind of gaming have similar memories of how those extras made the games more special.
"What a privilege to be tired from work you once begged the universe for." This quote sums up the gratitude I've been feeling to be working on Weepstone. I've honestly never worked harder in my life and I've had many days I'm stretching the stamina bar to 150%, but I truly believe that it doesn't get better than this. I decided I wanted to make games at age 8, banging out a BBS door in BASIC on my Commodore 64C. To be doing it now full time is a dream come true. (Quote credit: I believe Aryan Sachdeva said this)
Legacy Media types are calling this Alex Karp interview a “crash-out” so that’s your first clue that he is actually saying something extremely insightful. He is articulating what real “AI safety” looks like in the enterprise. Not abstract alignment research or certification by a government-run DMV for AI. Real AI safety for businesses is the ability to control their own data, model weights, and compute — so a frontier lab can’t hoover up their proprietary knowledge and turn it into their next product. As Karp explains, technical customers want “control over their compute, their models, their data stack, and their alpha. They want to know they own the means of production, and it’s not being transferred to someone else.” Don’t think that can happen? Just look at Figma. According to The Information, Anthropic “blindsided” its then-business partner with the launch of Claude Design. Figma’s founder said Anthropic had not been “consistently honest” with them. Anthropic’s chief product officer had even served on Figma’s board until three days before the launch of Claude Design. Figma’s stock has fallen sharply this year while Anthropic’s valuation has surged. This isn’t an isolated example. Anthropic has launched Claude Science, Claude Security, Claude Legal, and of course Claude Code — each expanding into categories previously served by companies building on top of their models. The pattern is consistent: watch where value is being created, then move in directly. Dominate the model layer, then use that position to capture the most lucrative verticals. Dario has argued that open source models powerful enough to compete with Anthropic are “dangerous.” But dangerous to whom? Not to enterprises that want to retain control over their data and workflows. Dangerous to a business model that benefits from customers having few real alternatives at the model layer. As Karp exposes, true enterprise safety isn’t trusting that a lab’s future roadmap won’t include your business. It’s retaining the ability to choose — at the model layer — who gets to see and use your alpha.
Palantir CEO Alex Karp on what customers actually want, the real business of frontier labs, and the importance of open source models: “What the technical customers want is control over their compute, their models, their data stack, and their alpha. They want to know they own the
