@ethGalaxy_eth@ValidatorEth@ensfairy According to @LefterisJP there are known & maybe intentionally never fixed “bugs” that enable taking of ENS names.
Imagine a scenario where Nick/Labs/ENS Foundation are served with a court order telling them to turn over names. If they can do that by vote, what will they do?
Not a single Labs employee is pretending the DAO was holding ENS Labs back from successful.
Nick has a 3 step plan:
✅ take ENS treasury
☑️ join ICANN
☑️ subject .eth to UDRP so .eth names can be taken
Don’t believe it? Ask Nick to sign a contract that ENS won’t join ICANN
Kain Warwick's read on the ENS fight: the scary outcome for DAOs isn't failure, it's that founder control works:
"The worst outcome here is power does get centralized, Nick has more control, and ENS does better. Because that's actually the nail in the coffin for DAOs."
@ethGalaxy_eth@ValidatorEth I wouldn’t say that about validator.eth
Being nuanced, Validator.eth created @ensfairy (look at the names in that wallet)
I don’t recall but he got maybe $200 or $300k from ENS for retroactive funding.
But has there been no marketing effort to get the names to the owners.
@ethGalaxy_eth@ValidatorEth I don’t think it’s any secret ENS Labs plans to acquire the DNS TLD .ens
If Labs succeeds they will own .ens & all income derived from .ens sales? Hint it won’t be the DAO
Labs is creating a conflict, where .eth has never been marketed but .eth revenue is going to acquire .ens
@0xDrewF Labs current jobs is to develop the protocol and market .eth. Plenty of people have issues with the way they are doing those two things, so it seems like a waste for Labs to spend the ENS treasury on buying a DNS TLD (.ens) as a side project and marketing .ens, if not a conflict
@0xDrewF The first article of the ENS Constitution was:
I. Name ownership shall not be infringed
So if ENS names can be taken through UDRP there goes everything ENS stood for
@z0r0zzz Yes .eth is reserved to Ethiopia, but I believe there is still desire from both parties in subjecting the ENS .eth subject to ICANN UDRP for trademark enforcement.
The very ENS service provider that got paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for identifying the “ENS gov threat” & proposing the security council details the Bunk DAO “attack.”
Cypherpunk/attorney @lex_node points out, Nick did the same thing & didn’t buy any tokens. Too good
@pray_eth@LefterisJP They created these opportunists, because they built a system of graft in perpetuity which they called “alignment of incentives”
A better approach would have been the DAO acting as an incubator with investments to ecosystem builders in exchange for equity.
@lex_node@owocki No, I’d love to see wallets publish metrics on how often an ENS name is actually used to transfer crypto vs using a hex. My guess would be for the PayPal integration, ENS probably gets no use. Custodial wallets rarely. Non-custodial wallets still the exception not the rule
@lex_node@owocki Disheartening about ENS
Unfortunately ENS is integrated into coinbase, base, metamask, phantom, rainbow, PayPal, etc… so ENS is the de facto winner of the blockchain namespace right now.
The name space needs competition for builders, ENS would be lucky to have metalex
@lex_node@owocki The problem is the kingmakers in Ethereum.
ENS DAO refused to support my system & method of “minting” Delaware protected series using ens subdomains to give every decentralized wallet a “legal wrapper” & managing LLC books with ENS records.
discuss.ens.domains/t/tokenization…
the .eth comes off, the end of a chapter for me
I have decided to move on from ENS, given recent events and other reasons. I'm grateful for my time with ENS and I wish everyone well going forward
This includes winding down @ethidorg. I and my incredible teammates are open to
these cute little creatures have dropped ENS support
I don’t know who or what they are, but when they do something everyone else follows
who will drop ENS integration next @coinbase@MetaMask@Uniswap@safe@etherscan
milady
we don't recognise Nick's claim over all Ethereum names so Scatter will be dropping ENS support for now - his name service should use .nick, .pozzed or something, not .eth
if a real common good Ethereum Name Service can materialise in the future we would love to support it
The DAO paid to have a security council that would have stopped the proposal if it were anyone other than Nick.
Some members of the security council were going to vote against Nick’s takeover, so Nick personally attacked them and voting against renewing the security council.
Hard governance lesson in all this:
Legitimacy is an asset in itself.
Like neutrality, it’s slow to build and easy to erode.
The test isn’t whether those exercising power have good intentions (or what they believe are good intentions). It’s whether the same actions would be
6/ The privilege of stewarding ENS must not be hoarded, but carefully shared with others committed to building the infrastructure of self-sovereignty, whether old friends or new travelers. We look forward to more arrivals in the months, years, decades and centuries to come.
