That’s certainly true. Poor choices can be costly, depending on the choice we’ve made. When I’ve wasted money, I’ve certainly learned to be more careful. Other decisions that didn’t work out taught me that I simply didn’t know any better at the time. I don’t see those as personal failures. I see them as life lessons.

Mistakes and poor choices are not the same thing. I came across a quote claiming there are very few mistakes in life, only poor choices. It didn’t sit right with me. A mistake is an error… a misunderstanding, a misjudgement, a forgotten detail, or acting on information that later proves wrong. The outcome wasn’t intended. A poor choice is different. It’s a decision that, in hindsight, didn’t serve us. Sometimes it comes from fear, immaturity, trauma, exhaustion, grief, addiction, or simply not knowing any better. People often call poor choices “mistakes” because it softens embarrassment or guilt. It feels easier than acknowledging responsibility. But the words aren’t interchangeable. A mistake also isn’t something outside our control, as the quote suggests. Things outside our control are accidents, bad luck, or unforeseen circumstances. When we blur these terms, we also blur how people learn. Not every mistake reflects character. Not every poor choice reflects bad intentions. Most of us are doing the best we can with the awareness, resources, and emotional capacity we have at the time. Language matters. It shapes how we judge ourselves and others. Maybe the better question isn’t whether it was a mistake or a poor choice. Maybe it’s simply: What can be learned from it? #AmandaRay #CriticalThinking #HumanBehaviour #SelfAwareness #Psychology
