A young woman named MacKenzie Tuttle graduated from Princeton in 1992 with a degree in English. Meanwhile, the story of Amazon became one of the most famous business stories ever told. Jeff Bezos became one of the world’s most recognizable entrepreneurs. MacKenzie’s role was rarely part of the public narrative. She never seemed interested in changing that. What many people don’t know is that she also knew financial hardship. Her family filed for bankruptcy while she was still a student, and she has spoken about the kindness of people who helped her through difficult times—acts of generosity she never forgot. In 2019, after her divorce, MacKenzie Scott received approximately 4% of Amazon’s shares. Almost immediately, she made a decision that surprised the world. She signed the Giving Pledge, promising to donate the majority of her wealth during her lifetime. Then she did something even more unusual. Instead of building a massive public foundation or attaching her name to buildings, she began giving away billions of dollars through large, unrestricted grants. Universities. Food banks. Housing organizations. Rural communities. Women’s health initiatives. Tribal colleges. Climate organizations. Small nonprofits that had never imagined receiving gifts of that size. Many recipients reportedly thought the phone calls were scams. They weren’t. Since 2019, MacKenzie Scott has donated tens of billions of dollars to thousands of organizations, making her one of the most significant philanthropists of the modern era. Despite giving away enormous sums, her fortune has remained substantial because of Amazon’s continued growth. The woman who once packed Amazon’s first orders is now helping fund opportunities for millions of people she will probably never meet. She never asked for buildings in her name. She never demanded headlines. Sometimes the greatest legacy isn’t the company you help build. It’s what you choose to do with the success that follows.

What if just 1 in 100 lawns gave up one patch of grass for wildflowers? Not the whole yard, I'm not talking a massive prairie restoration here. Just one strip along the fence, one sunny corner, one useless slope, one bed where the grass already looks bad anyway. There are roughly 40 million acres of lawn in the U.S. If even 1% of that became native flowers, grasses, shrubs, and host plants, that's about 625 square miles of new habitat. Bees would find pollen. Butterflies would find host plants. Birds would find caterpillars. Fireflies would find less-manicured edges. Ground-nesting bees would find bare soil. All in places that are currently being mowed, fertilized, sprayed, and treated like green carpet.

Have weather forecasts seemed less accurate lately? There's a major contributing factor: nearly half the morning weather balloons in the Lower 48 are "missing." This is an ongoing crisis that is degrading critical severe weather forecasts that we all rely on. It's having real, tangible impacts on degrading forecast quality. If you work in transportation, agriculture or commerce, this should matter to you. Regardless of the causes, this negatively affects people of ALL political backgrounds. Weather affects everyone. And it's impacting ALL of us negatively. We can't look at weather balloon data that doesn't exist. We can't pump nonexistent data into models. We can't rely as heavily on models that don't "know" what's happening above our heads. This is especially concerning for severe weather forecasts. We can't go 18 hours without ascertaining how the atmosphere is layered, how much storm fuel has built up and if severe thunderstorms are going to erupt. The Storm Prediction Center has even acknowledged forecasting frustrations in at least one public bulletin. As an atmospheric scientist myself, I can say firsthand – the forecasts I'm able to offer you are less accurate than they would otherwise be. I'm not able to predict severe weather with the confidence I normally would. That is extremely concerning. The United States is "supposed" to launch balloons at 0Z and 12Z ideally – a.k.a. around 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern time. That's not happening. Many sites, due to staffing issues stemming from broader political and organizational issues, have pushed to 18Z, or early afternoon. That's not helpful for morning severe weather forecasts. In other words, you get less lead time. Less advanced notice. Quicker ramp-ups and ramp-downs to the forecast. We're not able to get jet stream, temperature, moisture or wind profiles of the atmosphere each morning like we otherwise would. Moreover, the World Meteorological Organization encourages 12Z soundings; that data is shared via the Global Observing System (GOS) under the World Weather Watch (WWW). That's not happening.
